WWDC 2006 Keynote Coverage

http://www.macrumors.com/images/macrumorsthreadlogo.gif

MacRumorsLive.com will provide live coverage of the event starting at 1PM EDT (10AM Pacific). No need to reload the page, updates will appear as they are posted. In January, our system successfully delivered updates to over 100,000 simultaneous visitors.

More photos of banners posted at WWDC have been circulating. Apple appears to be taking on Microsoft's upcoming Vista operating system directly with banners that state:

"Mac OS X Leopard, Introducing Vista 2.0" (photo)
"Mac OS X Leopard, Hasta la Vista, Vista"

In the meanwhile, you can read the WWDC 2006 Rumor Roundup, see our WWDC related Guide Pages, chat in our IRC channel or participate in the forums.

We will continue to provide any last minute updates leading to the event.

Perhaps MS will change the name a third time before it is released.

I'm sorry I'm really slow, I don't get the slogan

Do they mean that Leopard is years ahead of Vista, like if it were to be like Windows next version OS

Yes - thats what it means...Leopard is like Vista 2.0.

Anyone believe that it could actually be released today...like for consumer consumption?

Longhorn is code name, The product name is Vista you will not see a third name for windows vista. Just like Windows XP I think was called Whistler (code name).

Just about all companies give there product a code name and then a release name once it's ready for the retail stores or a public beta like you see windows vista.

Haha, I love the digs at Vista. Vista's been getting so much bad press recently this is fantastic. They should simply have this video on repeat on screens throughout the event!!

Well, they weren't kidding about Tiger being "long before Longhorn". I'm excited to see what they have cooking. Thankfully I'll be at work until 6 EST so I can come home, boot up MR and read all about it.

I'm hoping that Leopard is more of an increment than the last couple of OS X releases were. I'd still rather use Tiger than any other OS, but Apple really needs to address its UI inconsistencies and usability issues. For example, I think that printing and font management in OS X are much more complicated than they need to be. Apple also should take a close look at the many third-party utilities that fill in gaps in OS X and make changes accordingly.

This would also be a good time to make sure that OS X is as secure as it can be. It's not enough to rely on the lack of Mac viruses and spyware compared to Windows, as Apple does in its advertising- the more popular OS X becomes, the more of a target that it's going to be. OS X needs a robust Security System Preference Panel that provides virus checking and other defenses and actively monitors for intrusions.

I hope not!

It would be kind of nice if ISVs could have a chance to make sure their stuff runs properly under the new release.

Apple will also want there to be a reason for people to pay for upgrades, and third party software that uses new features would be a big part of that.
