How hot is too hot?

What is considered the heat threshold where something may be wrong?

My white 2.0 macbook was running at about 150 farenheit, then I upgraded the RAM to 1.25 gb and it was running at about 144 farenheit. Then, this is the weird part, I installed the wireless might mouse software and it's running back at around 155 farenheit.

Whatcha think?

Is 155 F around 70 C? That seems fairly normal.

I have a laptop that hits over 90 C, which is close to 200 F.

And the computer will shut itself down if it gets too hot.

ya, it's around 70 C.

Does anyone have any idea if the mighty mouse software could be the reason the temp began to settle higher? I didn't do anything else that I would think would raise the temp. I'm just worried that the fluxuating temp could be an indicator of a problem.

100 deg C aka 212 deg F aka the boiling point of water, is generally bad for most electronic circuts. opperating temperature is 95 deg F (35 deg C) for the ambient air temp (from apple). but thats the temp outside of the macbook. the temperature you are measuring is the actual chip temp which would be bad should it get within 10 - 15 degs of 212 deg F

When your laptop can't sit on your lap because of the heat, then it's too hot. at least that's my scientific litmus test :-P

As I think that 63 celsius is too much while just idling, I've decided to find a solution for that heat problem. I'm quite sure that this will help me to avoid all the issues including random shut downs.

So my macbook's cpu temperature was usually 60-65 degrees. Now it's 47!!! Thanks to two things.

1. Cooling pad - temperature has fallen from 63 to about 54-55.

2. Turning bluetooth off. The solution, which I found on one of polish mac forums. The guy also suggested to turn airport off, but I can't cause I'm using wireless Internet connection.

I hope this will help someone.

Hi everyone!

After trolling around a bit, I'm finally posting for the first time after registering a week or so ago. I wanted to chime in on the whole "heat issue" I've been reading about in the various posts on these boards alone for about the past week.

I'm a relatively new switcher to Mac OS (Spring '05) and I have to say I can't believe I waited so long! My intro was the Mac mini G4. Still have it to this day and love the little thing. About a month after that I splurged and bought an iBook G4 1.33 14" laptop. That thing was great! It met my needs perfectly. However, with the switch to Intel, I've had the itch to "re-splurge", as it were, and move up the ladder to one of the Pro line 'books. I've decided on the 2.16GHz 15".

So, I recently sold my iBook to a good home in the hopes of getting whatever money I could towards the purchase of my new Macbook Pro.

I have to say that at first I was skeptical on making the jump, as I've seen more than a few posts on these boards about this heating issue all the 'books seem to have. But then I realized that my iBook was "hot" too. It wouldn't burn me or anything, but there were times I definitely noticed the higher temp difference. Despite this, my 'book seemed to faithfully chug along as it always had without so much as a hiccup.

Given my previous experiences (all good) with the Apple products, I've decided to go ahead and get the 15" 'book Pro. I look forward to more Mac Goodness and expect that something as powerful as these 'books are, you're bound to experience higher temps. Yes, if it goes beyond what is "normal" for a device like this, then something must be done. But I plan on purchasing a heat dissipating pad/stand of some kind to help give it that cooling edge!

Just felt like sharing my thoughts/expriences. And thanks for sitting through my ramblings.
