Just an FYI for all you Mac File Sharers. First I'll admit my guilt for some mp3 downloads. And I am sure I am the ONLY PERSON HERE who has done this. So most can ignore my warning. But apparently Limewire can download applications as well - here I was limiting myself to a song or two....(thanks to my little nephew who stayed the weekend with me and my little networked babysitter) and well some copyright person snaked my IP address and notified my provider and I got a major slap on the wrist. Saddly it was for a file that I never downloaded but my nephew did get that program recently... Hmmm.... The big point is that apparently I am the FIRST mac user to be slapped as a Limewire user according to the legal security guy my providers HQ. I guess other MAC users are being snagged from some program like 'hotfile' or what not... I've never heard of it... anyways... I guess MOM was wrong - it IS NOT NICE to Share!
Well - have a nice day! IJ

Your internet service provider (ISP) now knows and can hold a criminal record against you, because they have legal evidence of the download. You're lucky you haven't been slapped with something heavier.
I know someone, who literally downloaded a whole movie off Kazaa (he has a PC and DSL), and his ISP, Version, was contacted. A second violation would result in pressing charges. So he cannot download another DVD without getting away with anymore. It's freaky for a while. Not to mention that with a Terror alert on high and war officially enacted, I doubt the lead security at anyone's HQ is going to take chances. |

'the slap'
My "SLAP" was a stern warning that another complaint against me and I'd lose service. To think it was the same slap a person with child porn would get....what is funny is I asked my sister about 'the file' and turns out my nephew "just got the game with allowance money". So now he had to delete it and the CD destroyed and he lost non school releted computer time for a month! So my slap was his 'punch'. My sister could care less that he downloaded it - but the LIE about where he obtained the game did him in!
I feel that with all the ISP failures to no $$ profits that they'd never close all their accounts that have ever downloaded an mp3. But regardless... I'll maybe just go and buy a Dixie Chicks CD to protest their protest. Or find a way to mask my IP... but saddly I'd need my nephews smarts for that... either way... for now I've deleted limewire to avoid tempting fate. :-) The true crimes is Apple's Old Mother board - maybe they finally got the slap on the wrist and are working on improving that aspect of their criminally outdated technology!

Limewire is not perfect.
I recomend the total privacy program of freenet. Okay so its a hassle to set up but once you get it is good. They protect your privacy.

I work at my schools Resnet, we get 5-10 take down requests a week from the major media companies. They do sweeps looking for downloads of mp3's, movies, apps, etc... from their companies. However, they don't seem to look at the files, we were contacted about a student sharing Old School. We filed diciplanary action againts him, he was not sharing the hollywood movie. It was a home movie he named old school and he was sharing it, something that is perfectly legal. We now require more edvidence from the companites before we will dicipline students.

Geez, that sucks...I bet in a month this will be funny for you, huh?...So your the first huh? How does that feel? BTW, who is your ISP? How will they track what you share in the future(bandwidth useage?), if you used, let's say, KDX or Hotline?

For the record, my ISP is great. I run a server, and transfer around 50GB a month over a consumer cable line, and I never hear from anyone. Fantastic!

Anyone think that this might be due to all of the heat that Verison is taking from the RIAA? If I was a small ISP, I wouldn't be able to fight the RIAA as well. So, I would have to threaten my customers who were not compliant.
I am not commenting on the right or wrong of the situation. Just that it is a change in attitudes by the ISP's.

B) What the hell, what are you using all that bandwidth on? That old school thing is funny. 'I was sharing my home movie' 'what do you mean?' 'my home, old school' Big pain...

I would drop my isp before they had a chance to drop me. In this little beatneck town in which I live, I have 5 companys BEGGING me to switch to their cable/dsl service. So much competition Has brought down the cost of my dsl to around $30 bucks
Talk about big brother, if they did that to me I would show them the big finger. |
