Synaptics ClearPad Technology

http://www.macrumors.com/images/macrumorsthreadlogo.gif

Synaptics has announced a concept phone based on new "ClearPad" technology.

ClearPad is a thin, high resolution capactitive touch screen that can be placed over any viewable surface. This allows for sensitive touch input over existing screen technology.

Quote:
ClearPad is based on Synaptics' proprietary sensing technology, and will offer unique capabilities such as two finger input, proximity sensing, text entry and high resolution finger input that can dramatically improve and enhance the user experience with a touch screen.
The technology is expected to be available for manufacturers by the end of the year.

This is interesting to Apple users due to the number of rumors and patents surrounding a full-screen touch-control video iPod. Specifically, there has been discussion about Multi-touch sensitive displays, use of Gestures, touch interface patents, and the touch screen video iPod rumors. These rumors have spawned many concept designs depicting the unreleased iPod. Apple has an existing relationship with Synaptics who provided click wheels for Apple's iPods.

Ooh, I hear yet more footsteps as the iPod and iPhone marches closer to us.

Also sounds like it's suitable for new MacBooks (Pro and consumer MacBook)

How about a commercial model that fits over my MBP screen and connects via a USB dongle? That would make Google earth fun!

Apple needs to get an iPhone out before the holiday season or they will begin to lose market shares.

Again:

Clear touch technology + application changing interface = a new trick for an old dog.

Cell phone, iPod, Smart Phones; all with the ability to adapt to you, not you adapt to it.

Care to explain, or do I have to wait till the next issue of MAKE to show up on my doorstep?

How many LED's did you use? Do you have any software yet?

I have a feeling he just built the screen, which is dead simple to do. The question is in the software, and getting it to control a mouse (or multiple mice!).

Yaaaaaaaawn......

I m really getting bored of all these rumors bout iPhone, new iPod, merom MBP/MB etc. I dont know how you guys get all excited with any hint of a rumor. I dont really care for these rumors no more. No one knows what Apple has in store for us and we wont find bout it before it is launched. No one knew bout the MacBook release date even a second before it was actually released. So there is no point in getting all pumped up every time there is a news/rumor related to an Apple product.

All I do is wish for the new iPhone to arrive asap.

You do realize this site is called "MacRumors, right? That's kinda the whole point of the website, to, you know, report "rumors".

Yes I do. But did I ever hint I didnt? I didnt make a fuss bout MR reporting any rumor. What I was wondering bout was how can people be excited again n again for so long. That too at smallest of hints. That too when almost all the rumors turn out to be untrue. Most of the predictions(xcept the obvious ones) go wrong. Have a look at this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this or THIS. The list is endless.

I like this site coz of it`s excellent forum section. Not for the baseless rumors section. the posters in these forums are great. No matter how complicated your Mac query is, it`ll be answered within minutes.

I don't interface it with the OS, although thats not tough with apple script.

I'm just duplicating the functionality of a fingerworks pad so far. the bandpass filter is coming soon so I can shine light at it.

as for software. max msp is all you need. as for os, Macs are not multimouse-able. I just wrote a protools controller in max.

aside from that, I've been working on a way to traverse the hard drive which utilizes a 3d interface (actually functional, not just showy jurrasic park style)

so they might go together.

pleanty of info on the web. jeff han's paper is 10 bucks
