Bought my son an HP Laserjet 1600 yesterday for use at college. He's got a Dell desktop system and an iBook G4 (he uses the Mac as his primary computer).

Setup the printer and loaded up the Dell, no problem. Went to load the Mac and, duh, no driver on the CD. A little poking quickly revealed that the printer is "not supported" on the Mac. WTF?!

I fooled around with the Printer Setup utility associating other (supported) HP Laserjet drivers with the printer - just trying to get any kind of basic printing going. Nada.

Years ago most printer setup utilities included a basic driver for a "generic printer". There doesn't appear to be anything like that in the drop-down dialog of Apple's Printer Setup Utility. Is there any other way to get any kind of basic printing working?

TIA.

same problem

My mac can see the laserjet 1600 but can't install it
I tried sharing it with my windows 2003 server and using appletalk it prints but its just a error page
can't find the 2600n driver does anyone know how to use the 2600n driver for 1600

As I understand it, the 2600 is essentially the same printer as the 1600. OS X drivers for the 2600 can be found here.

You might want to follow the instructions in this thread for installing an HP Laserjet 1020 (also not OS X supported) with HP Laserjet 1022 drivers (OS X supported). Trying the step by step directions with the 2600 driver, even though you're installing a 1600 printer, seems like it would be worth a shot. :)

You can also download the opensource generic drivers, they may work. I use a 2200 and have had some issues, but mine is supported under OSX anyway...

I'd also google around or check sourceforge for DIY drivers.

Stumped HP 1600

I have converted from PC to Mac and am delighted. However I cannot get my HP color laserjet 1600 to work on it. I have no unix skills so feel at sea.
Can anyone advise.
Thanks

I'm having the same problem...I have a Mac (which I do all my photoshop files and pictures on) and...I JUST bought an HP 1600 laserjet printer. The guy SAID it was compatible with my Mac (OsX 10.4). I can see it on my computer...but it doesn't want to print out the page that it's supposed too. I can't even set it up properly...in my hp list of printers on my printer browser set up, it has just about every other type of printer for hp...except this one...I don't know what to do...:( the stupid disc was only for PC...so I had to download the software online...then...when THAT didn't work...I had to look up the instructions for the printer...it said all I had to do was connect it, make sure it was on, and it would print out the page automatically...that's what it said for THIS exact printer...:( It's giving me a hard time...what do I need to do!? I need the printer like...now! ;(

In summary here's what you need to do.

I found a work around.

It's not exactly perfect and the color looks awful... but it works.

All of the information can be found at, http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/foo2zjs

In summary

You'll need to download:

http://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/macosx/foo2zjs-1.1-UB.dmg

http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/downloads/foomatic-rip-3.43.2.15.ppc.dmg
and
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/gimp-print/espgs-7.07.1.ppc.dmg?download

I started by running the installer for ghostscript, then the installer called foomatic-RIP.dmg.

Lastly I ran the installer foo2zjs. When it finished a terminal window opened and I ran through the instructions listed there. I chose the option for the 1600 and then pressed enter.

Once all three installers have been ran open up print utility from system utilities. The printer should show up and choose the foomatic driver on it's own. Once the printer is installed you'll have b&w printing.

To enable the icky color go to this web address. http://localhost:631/

choose the printers tab

choose set printer options

under color mode choose color over monochrome.

Now color printing should work from your HP Color Laserjet 1600. Good luck!

I have exactly the same problem. I tried all usual admin/password types, with no luck. If somebody here has some info, please share it. Thanks!

Your admin name is the name of your Home or House folder. So by opening it, or opening the HD, you see the name on the left. I have a password, and it asks for it every time I download a new program. If it doesn't ask when you download then you probably dont have one. I guess you just leave the box empty.

A big thank you to you! Bought this printer today and was VERY disappointed when I realized that OS X wasn't supported! Thanks to this thread and your post my printer works just fine anyway :)

Thank You - This Works Great

THANK YOU CRAIGVERSE!
This work around solution works perfectly for me. I am not a "color professional" and on my system the colors seem to print out perfect to my untrained eye. Thank you so much. I recommend this solution to everyone.

Which Username and Password?

First of all, a big thank you to Craigverse: finally I can print on our network HP1600 and do not need to buy an extra printer just for my imac. Unfortunately, I cannot set the printer to print colors. CUPS asks me for username and password and no combination works. I have tried my own username and password (the one asked when you install new programs on the mac), the name of my home folder with the same password, any type of lower and upper case combination, the network administration username and password, etc, etc.. but with no success. Can anybody help me?
Thanks a lot!

Thank you very much, Gsahli, this seems to be exactly my problem and I will try to solve it as described. I actually found a workaround: it is possible to edit directly the printer configuration file from Terminal, but this is not really a workable everyday solution and I am not so good at Linux, so I have to be careful not to do stupid things. Too bad we decided to buy this printer (I did not have a mac then).
And yes, I do have different username and passwords for the network and for my mac, because we have a older local network which is Windows based and owned by another user. The printer is a actually a network printer (which works perfectly well with Craigverse's workaround all the same).

CUPS password - read the info in the top left of this page:
http://www.cups.org/

PS - do you really have different usernames/passwords for all those functions?

This is 10 minutes later, and yes, it works! Still going through Terminal (luckily I have somebody to help me with linux) but now I can edit the printer configuration on the CUPS page. Color looks awful indeed!

It seems I cannot find the driver you are talking about. Here is the latest post I could find on the HP web page in relation to drivers for the laserjet 1600:

http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service...47626+1207677440354+28353475&threadId=1206674

It's dated March 2008 and basically still suggests the workaround discussed above. Please redirect me, if you do indeed find the driver.

I'm actually interested in buying this model since there's a sale. Half off. But now that I've been reading all these comments of incompatability with macs. Looks like HP came out with drivers for Mac Leopard in Feb this year. Can you confirm that it works well before I decide to purchase it. Thanks!

dell 944 - possible to Print at all?

Likewise, does anyone know if any of these solutions will work for the Dell 944 AIO printer? I've tried everything (gimp drives, etc.) to make it print from my Mac and am ready to chuck it out the window.
Craigverse, do you know?

It prints in B&W but not colour

Hi, i have the same problem. It prints in B&W but not colour, help me!!!!

Thank you!!

Pd:Si alguien habla español y me pudiera contestar en español lo agradecería enormemente, el inglés no es mi fuerte.

To improve the colors with HP 1600 I suggest the following: Change the ICM color profile from ”Default ICM color correction” to ”km2430_2.icm”. It improved pretty much the colors for me. Not perfect, but way better! A printer driver for KonicaMinolta but seems to work best with 1600 of the ones that comes with foo2zjs. It's the only km that I have installed, and begun to ponder how eventually other would work (km2430_0.icm, km2430_1.icm, km2530_0.icm, km2530_1.icm, km2530_2.icm).
So if anyone have some of these, it surely would be worth trying them also...

Print ➝ Printer Features
Feature Sets ➝ Adjustment
ICM Color Profile ➝ File km2430_2.icm

Ok

Thank you,
I use the icm color profile of hp 2600 and it is ok!!!

Print BW but not color Req. a password which I don't know

Hello everyone,

I am a new mac user. Not good with computers, but I was able to complete installations and now I can print with HP 1600 Laserjet. Thank you Craigverse for great explanation!

I can only print BW. To also print in Color, I followed instruction for the website http://localhost:631/. But in order to save changes the website asks for a user name and password which I do not have. My computer doesn't use any passwords.

What is the user name and password in order to save Color changes in http://localhost:631/ ?

I have visited www.cups.org as directed but I couldn't find anything about user name and password on that website.

Thanks
