Apple Seeds Mac OS X 10.4.8 Build 8L2112/8L112

Apple seeded Mac OS X 10.4.8 to Developers on Friday. A number of issues are fixed in this seed including issues with Image RAW, CoreImage, ColorSync, Rosetta, Xsan and File Manager.

The Intel version of the build is said to be 8L2122 and the PowerPC at 8L112.

An unconfirmed Digg posting claims that there are a number of other significant changes to 10.4.8 including enahnced OpenGL and Video performance, but this has not been confirmed.

It's possible this could refer to Multithreaded OpenGL which is presently only available on the Mac OS X 10.4.7 build that ships with Mac Pros.

The earlier thread discussed a previous build (build 8L2108/8L108).

I can verify the "opengl" thing. It's a huge difference in specinit, as well as general tests. I can put google earth up on my 60" LCoS second display, and have it run completely smoothly which it wouldn't do prior to the update.

Also h.264 video feels like it's playing in leopard for those developers fortunate enough to get a copy from WWDC.

Are you saying that running with 10.4.8 on Tiger on a G5 is much better? You're not very clear about what you're running on.....

I can say this much

I was using a stock Macbook 1.83 with 1Gig RAM.
Playing COD 2.
When I had it set to 640X480 I was getting around 15FPS.Consistantly.

I increased the resolution to 1024X800 to fit my 20" attached Cinema Display with the MacBook lid closed.

When I did this the weirdest thing happened.

I started getting 35FPS and whats even more weird is whenever the action got fast the FPS would drop to 9FPS then suddenly adjust back up to 30FPS.It did this every time the graphics got more intense.

I'd say there is something good going on with OpenGL.

If you're a Select or Premier developer, you should already have it. If you aren't, you shouldn't be asking for it. Wait for the final version to arrive. Otherwise, you might be screaming about losing a bunch of data.

Are you "appledev" from Digg? Your post correlates almost word-for-word with a comment on the Digg story. Do be careful with the NDA stuff you're writing over there.

I'd like too see improvements to Rosetta and CPU usage. Other than that, I'm very happy with Tiger these days. Running very stable for me, especially in contrast to the 10.3.9 system at work I run side by side with my MacBook.

So does anyone have any idea when it'll be released? I suspected it could be tonight but seeing as no-one else has made this comment I think I could be wrong

What's the typical time between seeding and putting out for download?

Nobody knows, they're out when they're finished. There have been in the past many seeds of different builds. I'd be surprised to see a point update after only 2 seeds.

What's so new about the 10.4.8? I downloaded it but I don't know what it did.
