True Video iPod By Christmas?

Thinksecret believes that Apple may be able to get its reported "true" video iPod out to production by October, and thus just in time for the holiday buying season. As has been expected, the new iPod would complement the existing lineup at the top-end rather than replacing any existing models. Thinksecret points to recent price drops as evidence that there is now room for the new model in Apple's lineup.

Thinksecret has reported in the past that the program has seen significant technical hurdles that forced a delay in launch. However, the source of this new information is labeled as unconfirmed, so a dash of salt is recommended.

It would be strange to preview iTV, which won't be out until 2007, but not preview a new iPod product that will be out this holiday season.

The imminent release of the iTV won't hamper the sales of any other products. A new widescreen video iPod, on the other hand, would kill sales of the current 5G video iPods.

Not true at all, quite a few people are not interested in video on their iPod period but the Nano doesn't provide enough storage for their library. Apple will probably eventually replace the 5G with the Video but in the mean time it will become their flagship above the 5G.

I think the shuffle and a high-end iPod have two extreme different markets...

No because Apple is only selling the Shuffle 2G now, if you want a Shuffle you have to buy a New one and wait(or refub but thats a whole new ball game)

Unless it's like 500 dollars.

not really. Knowing the iTV is coming won't likely effect your ipod purchasing decision. Knowing a video ipod is coming might very well delay your purchase decision.

Do you really think Apple would kill off sales for their new 80GB iPod by telling everyone there's a new one on its way?

That's true, but if there really isn't a new widescreen iPod coming out, then no harm, no foul. I want it to come out, but that isn't going to make it happen. These rumors for the widescreen iPod are dubious at best (as much as I hope they come true ).

It does seem likely that Apple would release a true vide iPod before Christmas. Did anyone notice that the updated models were kind of brushed over at the last keynote? Steve normally makes a big deal but it just made me think that there is more to come. Also if anyone remembers when the iPod Photo was released, they lowered the price point of the black and white and made room for the photo at the top end.

I made a very similar post a little while back, to me the last iPod release seemed to be nothing a non event considering the fact the Nano got a massive overhaul.

The iPod Nano and Shuffle seem to be very similar stylewise and the new iPod just seems a little out of place like "last year's model".

I personally think we will see a new iPod before the release of the Zune, Apple has something up it's sleave to blow the Zune out of the water and to support the new iTunes movie store.

While as soon as the widescreen iPod does appear, whether it's this year or next, I will mostly likely sell my 5G video iPod and get the widescreen iteration.

One aspect of the Zune I would like to see implemented in the next iPod is wi-fi capability, as long as apple can manage to keep the battery life respectable. If it ends up taking a hit, then I would say just get rid of it. I would love to have open wi-fi access--not just share a song with someone and have only a few listens before it self-destructs.

If nothing else, the simply widescreen option will make me upgrade.

You mean for song sharing? Don't get your hopes up, they just added iPod-to-iTunes copying, and only that for copies with the same iTS account. Cool as it might be, we will never never see it. Zune's thing is just a gimmick to sell more songs online.

Oh, my hopes aren't up at all. I just think it would be an interesting inclusion. Whether it has it or not isn't going to change my decision to buy a widescreen iPod in the least.

And it would obviously be for song sharing pretty much exclusively. Wi-fi trading anything other larger than songs in file size would kill the battery pretty quick.

The Zune wi-fi may be a gimmick, but I'll wait until it releases and try it out before I cast judgement at it, but that's just me. At this point, the Zune is an intriguing device.

I think i'll just save up some money and get a new nano. This news gets me really excited but I just don't get why I would want a huge screen video ipod. I don't really travel a lot, and the only use for something like this would be on a plane. Plus it's gonna be atleast $400 (i'm guessing a higher capacity for $600). I got my macbook and if I ever want to watch something i'll just use the 13'3''.

I really hope this rumor is true. Since Apple set up a movie store for the iPod, I would like to see a true video iPod.

I was hoping Apple would release it in time for the holidays and this just makes me feel better. Sure it's not an official confirmation, but I can't see Apple letting the holidays pass by without amazing us with a brand new iPod, not counting the nano. It's been almost a year since the 5G iPod was introduced, so it's definitely due for a real upgrade. Of course it wouldn't replace it since not everyone wants a full screen iPod. I would order one right away, though.

Come on, Apple. Make my Chrismas awesome!
