Apple's Phil Schiller at Intel Developer Forum, Viiv Contest
http://www.macrumors.com/images/macrumorsthreadlogo.gif
MacNN reports that Phil Schiller joined Intel's Paul Otellini on stage at Intel's Developer Forum. According to another report, Schiller stated that this was "just the beginning of the things that Intel and Apple can do together to bring to market the best computers that consumers and professionals have ever seen." Otellini discussed the successful launch of the Core 2 Duo processor which powers the latest iMacs: Quote:
Meanwhile, Intel has also announced a $1 million contest for the best ("sexy, small, and sleek PCs") design utilizing their Viiv platform. Viiv is a reference design utilizing their dual core processors intended for home digital entertainment. At present, Apple has not adopted the Viiv design/name in its computers, but there had been speculation that they might. |

Doesn't Viiv just mean DRM "features" that we don't want? From everything I've heard about it, I pray that Apple doesn't adopt it.

![]() So, Phil, if the ramp-up of Intel's C2Ds has been the fastest in history, where are the new MBPs?

I don't think Apple will adopt VIIV at least in the name exactly for the same reason that they are not part of the "Intel Inside" campaign. Apple is all about uniqueness while VIIV, Intel Inside are all rubber stamps that other clones use just for being in the "me too" group.

From the article: "With Core2 Duo we have the best performance, from the thinnest notebook to dual processor servers, and we are very pleased with the way this product is ramping."
You don't have it ramping in any notebooks. Nimrod. |

Well the ViiV stuff only matters in Windows Media Center, so I can't see it making any kind of appearance in Apple's stuff. There might be some ViiV integration in iTV, but I doubt it. Thus far, ViiV has been little more than over-marketed vaporware.
Today's announcements from Intel and DirectTV bring a little life to the platform though, it will be interesting to see what happens with that and iTV. More exciting was the announcement about the upgraded integrated graphics chip which can do Aero Glass in Vista, which would bring a much needed bump to the chips in Mac Minis and Macbooks. If we're not going to see seperate graphics cards, we might as well get better integrated ones.

Being a shareholder of both Intel and Apple, from before the announcement Apple was moving to Intel chips, I am estatic about this. I hope Apple uses the Viiv concept to instantly enter into a controlled ecosystem of digital entertainment possiblities. Does everyone forget about "Intel Inside" and what that accomplished? Viiv will do the same.

it's kinda sad apple didnt use Core 2 Extreme chips in imac instead of the Core 2 Duo's that way they would have enough 2Duo's for the laptops.

from what I gather on the article the quad is for desktop and servers.
Just reading the report gets me so frustrated over the MBP's. I really don't know what to say...

Wasn't that sticker campaign just for extra marketing anyway? How does a chip built around DRM have to do with an ad campaign ?

Isn;t it strange that people call someone Nimrod as an insult? The Bible calls Nimrod "a mighty one on the earth."

Precisely! That is what Viiv is, a coordinated Marketing/Certification program. See, we here at Macrumors represent a VERY small portion of the marketplace, and I might add for the most part intelligent and intellectually curious. Most people in the market can't figure out how to save a picture to the computer. Apple is getting a upfront driver seat picture to turn the Viiv platform into a juggernaut in my opinion. An Intel and Apple partnership can provide the breakthrough Apple needs to become the company that it never has before: dominant. Jobs is on a rampage, and Viiv is a launching pad to a broader market. Quote:
