Apple's Phil Schiller at Intel Developer Forum, Viiv Contest

http://www.macrumors.com/images/macrumorsthreadlogo.gif

MacNN reports that Phil Schiller joined Intel's Paul Otellini on stage at Intel's Developer Forum.

According to another report, Schiller stated that this was "just the beginning of the things that Intel and Apple can do together to bring to market the best computers that consumers and professionals have ever seen."

Otellini discussed the successful launch of the Core 2 Duo processor which powers the latest iMacs:

Quote:
When it comes to performance and energy efficiency, Intel's new Core micro-architecture and flagship Intel Core 2 Duo processor have set a new standard for the industry, Otellini said. He showed where Core2 Duo benchmarks led across a wide range of applications and said it was now the fastest-ramping product in the company's history, with 5 million units shipped since it was introduced less than 60 days ago.
He also discussed their plans for 45nm products across desktop, mobile and server lines as well as the plans to ship Quad-core processors by November.

Meanwhile, Intel has also announced a $1 million contest for the best ("sexy, small, and sleek PCs") design utilizing their Viiv platform. Viiv is a reference design utilizing their dual core processors intended for home digital entertainment. At present, Apple has not adopted the Viiv design/name in its computers, but there had been speculation that they might.

Doesn't Viiv just mean DRM "features" that we don't want? From everything I've heard about it, I pray that Apple doesn't adopt it.

Quad core by November?

So, Phil, if the ramp-up of Intel's C2Ds has been the fastest in history, where are the new MBPs?

I don't think Apple will adopt VIIV at least in the name exactly for the same reason that they are not part of the "Intel Inside" campaign. Apple is all about uniqueness while VIIV, Intel Inside are all rubber stamps that other clones use just for being in the "me too" group.

From the article: "With Core2 Duo we have the best performance, from the thinnest notebook to dual processor servers, and we are very pleased with the way this product is ramping."

You don't have it ramping in any notebooks. Nimrod.

Well the ViiV stuff only matters in Windows Media Center, so I can't see it making any kind of appearance in Apple's stuff. There might be some ViiV integration in iTV, but I doubt it. Thus far, ViiV has been little more than over-marketed vaporware.

Today's announcements from Intel and DirectTV bring a little life to the platform though, it will be interesting to see what happens with that and iTV. More exciting was the announcement about the upgraded integrated graphics chip which can do Aero Glass in Vista, which would bring a much needed bump to the chips in Mac Minis and Macbooks. If we're not going to see seperate graphics cards, we might as well get better integrated ones.

Did they just say quad core mobile chips by november? Do you think that would be why apple isnt updating the mbps yet?

Being a shareholder of both Intel and Apple, from before the announcement Apple was moving to Intel chips, I am estatic about this. I hope Apple uses the Viiv concept to instantly enter into a controlled ecosystem of digital entertainment possiblities. Does everyone forget about "Intel Inside" and what that accomplished? Viiv will do the same.

no the quad chips are desktop chips, similar to what is in the mac pro's currently.

it's kinda sad apple didnt use Core 2 Extreme chips in imac instead of the Core 2 Duo's that way they would have enough 2Duo's for the laptops.

Maybe Apple doesn't but I believe other PC makers do.

from what I gather on the article the quad is for desktop and servers.

Just reading the report gets me so frustrated over the MBP's. I really don't know what to say...

DOH! You're right. It was a Otellini quote. I thought it was still a Schiller quote. My bad.

During the brief appearance, Schiller touted Intel's new Core 2 Duo platform and discussed how Apple has been able to innovate with sleek form factors and leverage the Intel Core family of processors across its entire computing product line.
Tout it once you actually manage to put out some notebooks with it, until then, you better shut up, or else people notice that the chips you speak so highly of is nowhere to be found in any of your mobile products..

Man I want a new Macbook Pro..

Similar in the way that they have more than one core? The current Xeon's powering the Mac Pro are only Dual Core. From what I've heard, the exciting thing is that current Mac Pro owners will probably be able to swap the current chips out for some Quad-cores, making a pretty sweet Octo-core machine.

It's not really sad when you consider that they would undoubtedly have gone with Conroe if they could have made the engineering work. The fact is that the iMac's tight architecture is more like a laptop than a desktop. I'm not saying it couldn't be done, but it might require some ingenous engineering and quite a bit of perserverance to get it to work.

Disclaimer: I'm pulling all of this from what I've read, and acknowledge that the Conroe specs may not be any more difficult to cool than the previously used Yonahs.

You do know it's not a no strings attached prize, right?... the money is to actually produce the machine, not to buy a Ferrari...

$600,000 for mass production and $400,000 for marketing

Precisely! That is what Viiv is, a coordinated Marketing/Certification program. See, we here at Macrumors represent a VERY small portion of the marketplace, and I might add for the most part intelligent and intellectually curious. Most people in the market can't figure out how to save a picture to the computer.

Apple is getting a upfront driver seat picture to turn the Viiv platform into a juggernaut in my opinion. An Intel and Apple partnership can provide the breakthrough Apple needs to become the company that it never has before: dominant.

Jobs is on a rampage, and Viiv is a launching pad to a broader market.

I disagree that apple is about uniqueness, I think they have changed, I think they are about ubiquitousness
