RED MacBooks and iMacs?

ThinkSecret reports that Apple is considering bringing more products to the (RED) campaign depending on how well the iPod nano sells.

According to the site, Steve Jobs and Bono have considered bringing a RED iMac or RED MacBook to market.

Red MacBook looks good to be more easily spotted by thieves.

A red macbook would be very cool; I dont know if the iMac would do quite as well (its much larger for such an intense color, its in your home)

If a thief is looking to steal your laptop, I dont think it matters what color it is.

Nah I would shy away from white, I mean think of the yellowing problems!
Red mac book would be awesome and the cause is even better.

I remember seeing a fake Red MacBook picture before the launch of MB. It certainly looked pretty good to me. I`d really want Apple to bring back some color in their computers. The translucent eMacs and iBooks looked really amazing. This BLACK n WHITE world is just not what I used to associate with Apple. It`ll be really great if they offer us some more color options. (and for a reasonable price too)

I agree with this - bring back the original iMac colours

Didn't someone crack open their MBP display and put in an insert to make their apple light a frosted classic logo? If they could do that, then you can do a red logo for the price of the warranty!

Studies show that white is actually more eye-catching than red.

It's easy to find or fund a study that yields a desired result(s) . . . regardless of topic. I could probably find a study that shows that reading is bad for your health!

It is. Same with green/yellow -- more reflective, generally speaking. But red as a color has more psychological effect or meaning than white. It may not be as visually noticeable amidst various colors or in a colorful environment, but it's a color that people notice and associate with something. We have trained ourselves to think of bright red sports cars, fire trucks, etc.. A bright red notebook sitting on a desk or in the lap of a stranger at an airport is going to scream out to people "hey, I'm not a typical computer!". I've traveled with boring Dell and HP notebooks for years... No one ever gives them much of a second glance... Except maybe the poor soul next to me on the airplane that has that "oh, crap" look when I pull a 17" HP out of a bag. But I took a metallic orange Hypersonic notebook on a trip this past summer. I borrowed it as my HP was acting up and I had to leave ASAP. The looks I got in the airport and everywhere I had it out were rather uncomfortable. People gawked at it. People would ask where I got it or what it was... I would imagine that a bright red Macbook would have the same effect at first until enough people bought them and everyone became desensitized to it.

Sorry for the drawn out reply, but I still think an all red Macbook would be a strange idea. I'm not sure if it would be a bad idea, it would probably do a lot to accomplish Bono's intentions of drawing attention to his cause.

As for some of the other mock-ups posted. I don't see a red Apple logo... I doubt Jobs will let Bono mess with the logo. If it happens, I see red accents, perhaps a red top with the white lit logo. Or more than likely, all red on the inside surface when you open it, and still a white keyboard with red lettering. Actually that could look kinda cool even though red isn't exactly a color I would want to buy. Maybe that's my problem, I don't really like red.

Red would take away from the sleek exclusuve image and look tacky. I think it is a bad idea

I think the red would look a little goofy... kind of like those Ferrari edition laptops someone was making a few years back. Bad idea.

Some Red products have red accents. For instance, red racing stripes on the edges, red apple logo, or red letters on the keyboard. (edit) as I was beaten to the punch in saying

Doesn't look so bad to me. They just need to jack up the contribution. $10 for an iPod Nano is CHEAP considering the profit margin. Should have been $25 at least. I'll be looking for a couple hundred contribution for an entire laptop.

When the rumor of the red nano popped up a few over in the new MB/MBP update thread got a chuckle out of this possibility. I'm sure others thought of it too and I don't know how much credit this rumor carries.

I can see it happening though. And while red for an iPod nano works, I don't think an MB or iMac would be all red. But rather have red features or accents. Perhaps on the Macbook it would just be red on the inside when you flip the screen up or something. I can't imagine too many people would want to buy shockingly red computers... Apple would sell a lot more if they were lime green, or blue or purple.

Oh, and I agree with spicyapple... The red would make it more noticeable to opportunistic thieves.

Its sorta sad that the all mighty ThinkSecret has fallen, now on page 2. I don't think this will happen, as much as I love the looks of the red nano, it would be to big/intense for a MacBook/iMac.

FWIW, they seem to agree. The Secret Notes section carrying this story is something recently added over there, it's the TS equivalent to Page 2.

I think it owuld have to be matte, or an anodized aluminum finish like the iPod nano to look good. Otherwise it's just tacky.
