I'm going to sanfran for the weekend. Since it is such a hotbed for wired -- or hopefully wireless -- activity I was wondering how (or where) I to find wireless access for my powerbook.

I've heard about some apps that search out wireless access points and/or tell you where they are but, to tell the truth, I'm not an uber computer-person so I could use some help.

Thanks

go warwalking, look for weird signs all over the place (done in chalk, kinda looks like an x sometimes) and get something like iStumbler, MacStumbler or KisMAC (all available on versiontracker) and drive all over the place.
it's fun 😀

i know 😀 😛
warwalking is taking a laptop out with you and walking around the place looking for wifi networks

I guess that gets to my question. Is there any way to find wifi access without warwalking??

yeah.

wardriving.

but seriously, what do you mean? Other than walking around (or moving around?). You can go to starbucks and hook up on T-mobiles network for a fee.

But why do that?

It's not free. It used to be but they have started charging at least here locally.

Kinkos and some Schlotsky's Deli's.

Here's the ultimate site I just found for finding hotspots.

http://www.80211hotspots.com/

There is a lot of them in San Francisco it looks like.

See that's what happens when you spend to many hours in a row on here late at night and read things just a touch to fast.

I apologize for my mistake. I promise to never ever ever screw up agina.😛 😉

Warwalking involves going out! You walk on the street with a laptop, sometimes holding it above your head to get better reception! How is that not normal?!

Ok, I'll stop now.

The only thing that could seem more normal would be War Segwaying.

Fat too. Don't forget that part. I'm just waiting for the Segway with a chair on it and the luxury edition with a leather recliner.

it's not normal because most people are PC users and they're just getting used to the idea of having wifi in their laptops 😀
i don't have a segway, i'm waiting until they get faster then i'm getting one...
anyway warwalking is good for you...and it's fun...
