Lets not forget, Steve did say OS X was leading a 'double life' and certainly if he gave away that secret of OS X and Intel earlier, their revenue could have been compromised.

As many times as uncle steve has said one thing then done another, it still amuses me that peeps on the boards will go "but steve said they never would!!" then proceed to call anyone who disagrees with them an idiot. Same guys go orgasmic when what they railed against the week before actually gets released.

As I write this on my MacBook.

Indeed. When the Intel rumours started up in mid-2005, I remember stating quite adamantly that any Intel processors in Macs would be Intel-manufactured PowerPCs

Yep, even though a few months earlier, he went to some length not to rule out a switch. The one I remembered was "we like to have options.". Teh Steve even telegraphed that it would be open for consideration once OS X covered 40% of the Mac user base. (The magic 40% mark was finally announced at WWDC 2004.)

I still think it was a mistake to get rid of PowerPC. Maybe not a financial one, but at least a technological one. RIP, PowerPC.

With the things we can now do with Intel processors, I don't think so...

Technology is only useful is you're willing to develop it and program for it. At the Mac's market share, the PowerPC wasn't profitable enough for Freescale/Motorola to develop further and IBM and there wasn't enough incentive for programmers to make a quality product.

It was dead until the EDU market threatened to completely ditch the Mac.
