How to find the value of an apple gift card

Hey-
I have an apple gift card and I'd like to know how much it's worth, but don't feel like going to the local apple store to find out or redeeming it online, as I don't need to use it now.

Here is their FAQ.

How can I check the balance of my Apple Gift Card?

Call 1-888-320-3301 and follow the instructions. You can also see your balance by visiting the account area of the online Apple Store online.

I don't really know how the online option works. Do you have to deposit the credit into your online Apple Store account in order to be able to see it? And does that prevent you from using it in the brick-and-mortar Apple Stores?

I happen to have a card I got at a B&M store, and the online option showed me the proper balance.
