I'm using my 28" Widescreen television as a secondary display sometimes to watch movies from my iMac. It works great. But to disable it being used as a secondary display I have to plug out the mini-dvi cable from my iMac. Isn't there a simpler solution to this? My Windows PC has some sort of software from ATi that has profiles for things like this. Like "Tv connected" (uses the TV as primary display to play video feeds on) and "Tv not connected" (uses only the computers own screen).

Is there anything like this available for OS X?

Using Built-in prefs, this is not possible. I don't know of any third-party app that can do this, but I guess there might be an Apple script to achieve such a thing.

It's nuts, I've just hooked my iMac up to my projector and have to do the same thing, either unplugging the MiniDVI or switching the projector off. I did however notice yesterday that when I make the projector the primary display (by dragging over the menubar in display prefs) and open Front Row it switches off the iMac monitor. Although I understand that's the exact opposite of what you're after, but it's less distracting when watching things on your other device!

You're luckier than me. My iMac doesn't care if I turn my TV off. It still happily thinks it has two display connected to it. I have no other choice than unplugging the MiniDVI.

Thanks for the tip!

You know what, I think my iMac does the same and still thinks the projector is connected, but at least if I've switched it off then I don't have that ever so slightly distracting 120" of bright screen in my peripheral vision.... :p

I know I'm reviving an OLD post but still no way to do this?
I have searched everywhere!

I just got the mini-dvi to vga cable to use as a secondary display for video playback and I dont find a way to disable it when not in use. The resolutions are different so miroring is not an option.

This has also been discussed in the Apple support forum and still no way to do this form the OS.

Any Ideas?

Something that is so easy to do in Windows....
