Hon Hai Receives iPhone Contract?

According to the Commercial Times (mirrored by Forbes), Taiwan's Hon Hai has received a 12 million unit contract for the rumored iPhone. According to the site, the product would be released in the first half of next year, which currently echos other reports.

The article also briefly mentions Hon Hai receiving a contract for a 15" MacBook, due to be delivered next year or in January. This most likely refers to Hon Hai simply becoming another supplier of the 15" MacBook Pro rather than a new 15" MacBook model. There have been previous reports (reported by AppleInsider) that indicated that Hon Hai subsidiary Foxconn was looking to procure a 15" MacBook Pro contract.

I refuse to get sucked into more iPhone rumors. I'll believe it when I see it. Otherwise I'll go about wishing I had money to spend on Mac products that actually exist.

It would indeed be cool to have a model like that available for people.
Although I'm hoping, if that's the case, that there's also a smaller model available that's primarily a phone. For me, I just want a small phone that's not much bigger than my Razr or Nano -- but with some cool, unique features that only Apple could do.

Agreed.
People may think these iPhone rumors are annoying, but the people who post on the threads to say "I refuse to get sucked into these iPhone rumors" again and again and again are just as (if not more) annoying.
It's a RUMORS site, and if you don't like the rumor, just don't read/post. It's really quite simple!

I guess I am being very silly, but I am truly holding out on a new phone. I am sick of my blackberry. it's clunky. it's ugly, and it really doesn't sync all that well even with the latest PocketMac Sync.
What I am more worried about is that the iPhone won't live up to the years of dreams and speculations.

Especially if said rumor is a given ... it's not only probable that Apple will release an "iPhone" it's a certainty. There's too many things adding up.

I like reading the speculation because it's the most anticipated Apple product for me since the LCD iMac and will be the most useful/versatile Apple product since the Pismo.

I'm thinking it will exceed every expectation. I think Apple has been honing this for years to make 100% sure they get it right.

I understand its a rumors site, but this is the Moby Dick of all Rumors because this is what, the 2nd year we've all gotten hyped up over this thing and they didn't release it? And then everyone gets their hopes up at the next Keynote and then they don't release what you all Wished they would release and everyone starts griping and being all bitter at Apple.

I love rumors, I really do. But this one has Cried Wolf one too many times for me to bother caring anymore.

I fully understand all the comments in this thread about the features/functionality of an iPhone, but I think if Apple want to really make it big with this, and hit the phone market in the same way that the iPod did, then the connectivity functionality has to be spot on.

Smartphones are somewhat of a niche area of the phone market at the moment, but it is growing. IMHO the iPhone needs to do bluetooth/wifi and 3G well, to allow a wireless connection to your MB or MBP and give you data capability on the go.

Without this, it won't even hit the business end of the market - where the real money is, and the Blackberry/WM5 devices will continue to rule unchallenged.

There's a real opportunity for Apple to wipe the floor here with what they do best - a simple, easy, sexy and cool solution to what is currently a messy and complex market.

But you can't allow yourself to get all bent out of shape just because it's been a long-running rumor that hasn't panned out yet. There are logical reasons this has been a rumor for some time, logical reasons why so many people get excited about it every time they hear about it, and probably just as logical reasons for why Apple hasn't released one yet.

If people get overly-high expectations about it, and then are disappointed about it once it's released, well then that's their OWN problem, isn't it? Don't work yourself up over what you THINK others might think. Therein lies madness...

Yet you care enough to keep posting about it!!

Look, you're frustrated about it, we get it. Perhaps you're itching for an iPhone yourself, and you just want Apple to come out with one already. But if the rumors really upset you, just..... don't read them!! And definitely don't post on the threads that you're sick of hearing about them! It just makes you seem... silly.

Look away, buddy. Look away...

I'm not really sure how to respond to this cause you aren't making much sense. I'm silly? gimme-a-break. But emotions don't portray over MR very well. Either way I'll contribute to the rumor mill...

I hope the iPhone is not called the iPhone instead I would prefer no "i"s and pPod is a bad idea too. Hmm how about RojoPhone?

Rojo, I'm with you on why it's been a rumor, and why it excites us. But i don't see the logical reasons apple hasn't released one yet.

Consider: New cellphones are introduced continually, with improved feature sets and smaller sizes. Logically, why couldn't apple do that, unless it doesn't think it can do it better? And numerous cellphones with music players are now in the market. Their execution is faulted generally not for sound quality but for their UIs, which i think we'd agree apple could do elegantly. So where's the logic in apple not having done so?

In hindsight maybe the logic in the delays will be apparent. But i didn't see it during last year's MW and I don't see it now. What logical explanations can you think of?

Not even close to the Moby Dick of all rumors. That would be the G5 Powerbook on Tuesday rumors. This is more like a largish bottlenose dolphin. With a bad flipper.

According to the latest news from Taiwan, the functions of iPhone include a camera with 2 millions pixels and mp3 player. It's scheduleed to be launched between the end of 1Q and the beginning of 2Q of 2007. iPhone is going to be manufactured by Hon Hai's manufacture company, Foxconn, and will be released no earlier than February. It's expected that about 500,000-600,000 iPhones will be produced each month.

It's also said that Hon Hai will officially receive the Macbook order from Apple from the 2Q 2007.

That "macs with intel chips" rumor was around for fifteen years, and did it come true?

That is a good point BUT when most people were saying it they were making it up rather than relying on "factual" or "substantive" rumor.

The only true rumor started up when OSX started and it leaked out that there was a project called Marklar - turns out this was a real project.

But the point is still valid from the quote above - that took 5 years of rumor and discussion before it came true.

The Iphone isn't a rumor any more - if Apple doesn't release it before Summer 2007 I think analysts will lose faith in them again and they may start to recede in the iPod market.

Consumers are also yearning for Apple to do to the cell phone arena what they did for the MP3 market a few years back.

2MP Camera

If it's really only two MP, that doesn't do much for me. At most it's good for about a 4X6 photo. I was hoping to get something useful as a digital camera. Something that would easily upload into iPhoto and if you were out, would take a photo that would actually be worth keeping.

Nice.

Although a 15 inch MB would be nice (or maybe 17 inch) it would then really be a media/digital hub computer

Although the demand for a 13 (11?) inch MBP is probably stronger.

I think the iPhone is still some time away, it will probably be a no show at MWSF. But the first half of 2007 will certainly be very interesting

Over the years Manufacturer rumors have proved less reliable than any other type of rumor. IMO, that 15" macbook rumor is incredibly bogus-- Apple's not going to gut 15" macbook pro sales.

I still have a bad feeling about this iPhone thing. Is it going to be primarily for the US mobile market (old tech and where telcos decide on the features of the phones) or is it going to be suitable for use internationally (good for us but mightn't suit the telcos in the US -> Apple has a hard time competing)?

Because either way there's a problem.

But there are plenty of folks who would like a larger screen than 13" MB offers, but don't want to pay two grand for notebook.

A lower cost 15" notebook would fill a hole in their product lineup. So too would a 13" or 12" MBP. IMO, both are likely first half of 07.
