Quick one, does the First gen Shuffle require USB 2, or will USB 1.1 be enough? Slow I know, but as long as it works that'll do for me...

USB 1.1 will work fine, just slow. If it's unpowered you'll need to get a power adapter.

Built in to a old-ish laptop, so that should be powered enough, right?

I think the laptop will have USB 2, bought at the turn of the year, but I thought I better check.

USB 1.1 is fine. I use my 1GB shuffle with my TiBook and sure the transfer is slow compared to USB2 but it still does the job.

I have yet to come across any Windows 2000 or XP PC that didn't read my shuffle, be it over USB 1.1 or 2. Same goes for any Mac. Transferring songs is definitely slow over USB 1.1, but it's bearable.

Check the Apple refurb store. Bought two 512 shuffles for 29 each. Right now they are sold out, but Saturday or Sunday they had some up, only to be snatched up during the day. So check often.

Good luck, and you might as well buy two 512 or one 1gig, as the shipping is half the price of a 512 (15$), but when you spend 50$, its free shipping. But I wouldn't tell my girlfriend that, I'll just let her continue to think that I was thinking of her out of nowhere and decided to buy her an ipod.

Quick note...

On Macs, it takes OSX 10.3.something (Not 10.2) to charge it with a USB 1.1 port.

Not sure about Windows machines.

Yeah, ideally I wanted a retail boxed one as its for xmas, a little extra for her. Anyway, the UK refurb store is ***** and they don't have them very often, don't like to buy that kind of thing from ebay any more either, especially with the amount of fakes knocking around ATM.
