How do I make an application start up when macbook is switched on.

Go to Apps -> System Preferences, then click Accounts, select your account, click Login Items, the little plus icon, then add the app 
Goto System preferences
then Accounts
choose your account
the Login items
click the + icon
then choose your application that you wish to open automatically.

edit: hahaa, its a macbook; i just read the title. What specs did you get, then?
alternatively, if your app is in your dock, just right click on the dock icon and select the "open at login" option

I have a white macbook and the specs are
Intel Core Duo
Processor Speed: 2 GHz
L2 Cache (per processor):2 MB
Memory: 2 GB
60GB HD
