iSight No Longer Available

The Apple iSight appears to be no longer available on Apple's online store. No reason for the removal is indicated. Instead the item simply no longer appears.

Meanwhile, the iSight Accessory Kit and Griffin SightLight remain available.

Update anyone?

The iSight page still works, the accessories page still works, just no iSight in the store. Probably just a problem.

Start the speculation.

For those who don't remember, this is part of a long-term progression. The iSight has been unavailable in the US store for quite some time now. It was noted here back in August that shipping time had slipped all the way to October. That was later revised to November, and now it's been removed completely.

Interesting...

And Hong Kong store... an update is needed I guess, but the complete removal of the product would be silly seeing as the Mac Pro and Mac Mini do not have built-in iSights. Integration into the displays might be useful, but not everyone uses the displays.

However shipping times in Hong Kong are listed as 24 hours

Don't forget the Mac mini. Don't leave these people in the dark Apple. I hope this is a sign of a revision and not a discontinuation.

It's not available in the UK either.

If a revision is in the pipeline, I hope it's cheaper!

Yeah I'm hoping it's a revision as well. I don't have a Mac Mini or a Mac Pro, but we can't leave those folks out! If Apple can fit that lil camera into that small area above the LCD, I think they can definitely cut the size of that thing down.

Ooh, what if the new displays came with a built in iSight? ..Eh, there I go dreaming again.

The iSight was pulled in the UK (and the rest of EU) at the end of June due to new hazardous material legislation.

But this US removal is new. As I mentioned there have been several delays in its US availability over the last four months, but it has periodically shipped in apparently limited quantities. Until now.

Gosh - I didn't know that!

Maybe that's why they've pulled it elsewhere too - letting stocks run down worldwide ahead of introducing a greener model.

That's certainly possible, but it's been a painful, drawn-out process to get rid of them!

Don't know about the online store here in Japan because I haven't checked.

However, the Apple Store in Ginza has many of them on the shelves.

Why would they introduce a new one? All new Mac models have one as standard ecept the Mac Pro - and it would be more sensible - and cheaper - to refine the Apple Displays to include a built-in iSight.

Apple don't have a reputation for supporting legacy Macs with new hardware, and anyway, iSights are too expensive - to make and to purchase.

Of course, they could put an iSight in an iPhone, and legacy users could use that, connected to their macs, to transmit in iChat...

Quite simply, why does the world need a real high quality webcam?

The iSight, if you may not know, is practically the god(dess) of computer peripheral cameras. They are well selling, too, so the only feasable explanation is an update. Now, of course, you say that it would be cheaper to put them in the ACD's, but keep in mind not everybody can afford those. In fact, many many users who own either a Mac Pro or a Mac Mini use 3rd party hardware, such as Dell or LG or Sony or w/e monitors, because they get the same or better quality for a much reduced price. They just don't get anodized aluminum.

They're going to make anew one.

And it will be smaller, with much higher resolution.

agree! i bought my son a mac mini - but it's a mess finding a good camera for it. isight is discontinued here in Europe - so I have to pick up a logitech etc - and that equals poor quality, functionality etc.

My speculation since they introduced the iSights built into the G5 iMac and Intel Macs (Mac Pro/Mini aside...) that they are going to create a USB 2.0 iSight with iChat available for PCs so Apple can corner the video chat market, after all iChat is the best out-of-the-box Video Chat application available.

I do recall a PC version of software update came bundled with early versions of iTunes 7/Quicktime 7 but that was prob in preparation for iTV.

New displays with built in iSight is a big possibility too as mentioned earlier.

Thoughts????

A friend of mine just bought me one for Christmas, and it shipped within 3 days. I too couldn't find it in the store ('cuz I was curious how much he spent). I'm curious how he bought it....

Hasn't the built-in iSight in the new iMacs and MacBooks been a better one than the stand-alone for some time now, and it's always been expensive (but Apple can charge what it likes because there is hardly any competition regarding webcams on the Mac).

I would love to get one but feel it would be a waste of money considering it will become redundant once I am finally in possession of hopefully a 12" ultra-portable MacBook Pro in a couple of years.

Until they get auto focus in the iSights in the notebooks the stand-alone version will always be a bit better.
