non apple wireless router + OSX control via system prefs


After you hook up a wireless router and configure its settings, what else can/ should you do in OSX?

Does OSX have any control over a wireless router?

osx 10.4.8

No, you should configure the router using its own software through the web browser. There should be instructions. You just point to the router's IP address (often something like 192.168.1.1 or 10.0.1.1). And then configure it there. Pretty much the same as in Windows.

All you have to do from OS X is adjust settings for the software firewall of the OS if you so desire and connect to the wireless network.
 
Ok, that makes sense.

next question,

Will I have any new tools or abilities in OsX now that there is a new wireless router attached?

Will I be able to detect other wireless devices?
Will any new icons become visiblle at the top of the screen?

Erm... 😕

Do you have other devices on the same wireless network as this router? If you have printers on the network that are either ethernet printers or on computers with Bonjour and sharing enabled, your computer should now automatically see them and be able to print to them without having to configure them. If you have Windows computers on your network, open Directory Access in the utils folder, and then go to the Samba / CIFS item and enter the name of the Windows workgroup into the blank. Then you should see all the Windows entities in the Network Neighborhood.

You should also see any shared iTunes libraries.

You should have an Airport icon on the menu bar (a set of radial waves).

That's about it. Is there something else you were hoping to do?

You should have had that before you had the router. If you don't see it, do this:

System Preferences -> Network pane -> select Airport -> Airport tab

At the bottom, check "Show Airport status in the menu bar."

The menu should look something like this:
