Linking three airport expresses

I am using one airport express hardwired directly to my dsl modem, I am trying to extend my range by using two more expresses. Can't seem to get any to work except the one directly wired to the modem. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

Are you using the AirPort Setup Assistant? When I set mine up for WDS, it was very straight forward with this assistant.
