Help I'm running out of space

I have a MBP with 100GB HD partitoned into 3.
Photo partion has folders totaling 3.3 GB and yet says 6.8 GB used
Video has folders totaling 5GB and says 6.88 Gb used

Most worryingly the Main partition of 60Gb only has 157MB free.

What is happening and what is the best way of freeing up space?

You need to get an external drive and off-load stuff you do not need to carry around with you everyday. But to answer the question: Remove iLife apps. you do not use, remove printer drivers for printers you do not have and remove language support for languages you do not speak (you can use monolingual for the last but do not remove architectures).
