You'll want the HDD if you ever decide to download extra maps (many are free) or any games from XBLA.

The HDD will cost you $100 alone. A memory card would be $50, if you don't want the hard drive.

The pro kit comes with HDD, wireless controller, and HD/SD cables. The core kit comes with no hard drive, a wired controller, and SD cables.

I believe you have to have the HDD if you want to use Xbox Live (online gaming)

This is coming from someone who does not own a 360 (I have a PS3) so take it with a grain of salt.

For only $100 more you get a wireless controller, 20 GB hard drive, Component cables, and a remote. You get other things too for online gaming. I seriously would spend the extra money. Wireless controllers and not needing a memory card to save are alone worth the extra cash.

You dont get a remote (that was only for launch systems only) but you do get 1 free month of Xbox Live Gold

And if you ever want to play original XBox games, you are going to need the harddrive. The extra $100 is really worth, I couldn't even consider the core system.

Some places are running deals such as Toys-R-Us where you buy the premium system and get a $100 game coupon, so you would basically get 2 free games. Check around, I'm sure you could find a deal somewhere.

The 360 plays standard DVD's without any extra equipment. It will also play HD-DVD's will the addition of a $199 accessory.

High Definition DVD's. One of the two competing formats (along with Bluray) for the next generation DVD's. They have better picture and image quality than standard DVD's due to the fact that the discs can hold more data.

No you can't. The Xbox 360 hard drives are entirely proprietary and there is no known way to use additional/other drives to use as a substitute. It really blows I agree!

So you cant just buy a 2.5 SATA HD and plop it in to a X360 like you can do with a PS3? I thought you could do that with both of them.

It's not just the hard drive you're getting though. You're also getting the Component cables and wireless controller instead of a wired controller. I think it's worth the $100 extra. I bought the premium version over here in the UK for an extra £80 which is around an extra $160.

Microsoft hasn't done anything like that yet – because of the way the HDD attaches to the system it isn't possible.

'Twould be nice, though.

I don't know about the PS3, but I know it's impossible for the xbox 360 at the moment.

Would be nice if MS dropped the proprietary BS. Memory cards, Hard Drives, WiFi? +1 to Sony there. +0.5 to Nintendo for built in WiFi and SD card support.

The premium is a better value and I think its definitely worth the additional 100$ bucks, HDD, component cable, wireless controller, wireless headset... its just the way to go.

Over here they don't even bother with the Core system...they're importing them from Japan and Hong Kong and there's not a core system to be found in the city. They also go for closer to 350 though and have some other things with them like a game of your choice. I think with shopping around you'll find a premium at core prices or at least value the same...
