iBook airport and its self assigned IP address

“airport has a self assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet.”

Scrounging around in preferences in my ibook, I get the above message. I am setting up my new-to-me ibook to use airport to connect to the web thru the airport on my mac mini. The mac mini is connected to the internet by ethernet (cable). I can find and connect to the mac mini, but I cannot surf.
A search shows no topics on this. Anyone seen this issue and have a work around or a fix? TIA

I'm on my way out the door but...

I believe this is a router/network problem, not the iBook. When I had error messages like that, everyone on the same network was having problems...

Not much help probably, but I'm in a hurry!

Good Luck

Internet Sharing must be enabled on the Mini (System Preferences==>Sharing==>Internet)

checked - it's on...

I can easily get on my neighbors unsecured system - so iBook airport is working. When I switch back to mine, it ask me for the WEP password and accepts it and links me - but no internet access.

great information! using it, I noticed my ibook said channel 11 and my mini said automatic...changed it to 11, but alas - no change!
ibook still will connect but will not download web pages. Nor will it do a software update...(thought perhaps web page cause its loaded with Firefox and mini has Safari)

Highly unlikely/impossible, I can't help anymore as I'm not sure what's wrong and I'm going out in 1 minute.

no problem - I appreciate your effort. Under "services", I have "personal web sharing" turned on too... darned if I can figure it out! I sit here hopping onto a neighbors unsecured internet with no problem...come back to mine and it asks for my password, connects up but will not let web pages load. I tried to connect iTunes to store - nothing...

The iBook should be getting an IP address from the mini anyway (not self assigned), I guess they are both on Mac OS X 10.4?

The web sharing again should be irrelevant.

Make sure you have Web sharing set to on on both systems.
On the Mini under Internet sharing mark share your connection from build in ethernet.
Then go down to were it says " to computers using "
and click on AirPort.
This should make it work.
It's been awhile since I used this setup.

Thanks! I double checked and all is as you wrote. I also have "apple talk" turned on for both systems.

OMG! After two days of head scratching and trying every combination possible! The firewall must be set as shown! I HOPE this only refers to my ibook connecting thru secure airport?

My ibook can access the internet...but only when my mini's firewall is turned off (as shown above). This is kinda scarey surfing with firewall turned off. It is also possible for me to connect to internet with ibook and then turn firewall back on (in the mini), and I can surf for 30 to 45 minutes before I lose access to internet again. Turn off firewall - connect - turn on firewall and surf for a while then repeat cycle again. I'd entertain any suggestions! TIA

A very ENTHUSIASTIC thank you to kingjr3!
