Is there a program out there that will synchronize files/folders between an external device (e.g., a flash drive) and the Mac's internal hard drive? By files I mean all kinds of files, not just address book entries (i.e., iSync is not it).

I use the aptly named File Synchronization. I've been using it for a couple years now, both to sync my PowerBook with a flash drive, as well as over the network to keep (certain folders on) my iMac and PowerBook synced.

It's not really polished UI-wise, and it's not terribly sophisticated, but it's one of the few little shareware utilities that I've paid for, and it was worth it. I think it's $15 now, seems like it was only $10 when I bought it a while back.

What is Deja Vu?

I need to synchronize folders containing 1000s of files. QuickSync trial only allows 100 files at a time -- not enough to test speed/reliability. How do you like it?

Sorry - Deja Vu is a cool little back-up app that comes with Toast (it puts it in sys prefs & i forgot that it came with toast not os x)

I thought QuickSync looked good, but haven't got around to trying it yet.

And the winner is...

File Synchronization.

Even though it's not terribly sophisticated, it's still and shoulders above all the others I've sampled. I'll make use of the 30 day trial and report back. I have a feeling it will work out just fine.

I own a copy of Chronosync. Occasionally I will create a one-time synchronization, but mostly I use it to copy my wife's iPhoto library to my computer, and to synchronize my documents on my .mac account to my home computer. (I use a .bat file at work to finish the job).

But occasionally I will use it to do one-time synchronizations. I've even used it to do a large copy where I wanted restart ability.

And without too much effort, one could write one rsync line, wrap it in an AppleScript and have lots more control over what gets sync'd.

Right now I use Time Machine for my day-to-day backups and rsync for just about everything else.
