A substitute teacher in Norwich, Conn., faces up to 40 years in prison because of pornographic images that popped up on her classroom computer in 2004. Several students at Kelly Middle School in Norwich saw the images appear.

Apparently a number of computer security experts have requested to testify on this individual's behalf that the pop-ups resulted from spyware infected on the computer. Interesting.

So... now, avoiding prison is yet another reason to trash MSIE and use Firefox or Safari? :D

Thats our backwards laws, more worried about sex then murder, rape, white collar theft, etc etc. This nations laws are a total mess. Yeah she made a mistake but its not a mistake that should cost anyone 40 yrs.

That conviction obviously won't last.

"Risk of injury to minors". Hmm...that sounds like an strange offence. I'm sure we don't have any equivalent in English law - at least not in criminal law. And even if we did, I would have thought it'd be a recklessness offence. I seriously doubt this woman, even if she had been on porn intentionally, foresaw any risk that dirty adverts would pop up.

How old were these kids?

The irony is that she is facing much more time than she would had she simply had sex with a student. I highly doubt she'll get anywhere near the full potential term, though.

Just about any kid these days using the internet is bound to run into porn. That is the real problem here (not that I'm complaining :p ).

Injury to insult, seeing as she likely got paid about $60 for the privilege of being sworn at/spit at/generally treated like crap and the shot at 40 years in prison.

God people are stupid.

Right back where I started...
Gotta love the legal system. Must not be many important things to do. So now in theory if I am reading a magazine of a bus and an insert card falls out that is deemed inappropriate - I am doomed. Sheesh.

I think it is fortunate that students did not suffer any physical injury. It is a well known fact in the American South that touching yourself "down there" causes blindness.

The real irony is that she probably would've gotten less time if she killed a student.

We've seen teachers get less time if they've had sex with a student, but still the time hasn't been decided. Realistically, if the judge has any sense, would only give her 2 - 3 years probation. It's still too much but it's interesting that they wouldn't allow a full account of what was happening.

I didn't see any mention of the computer's ownership but if it was the school district's computer, they should be partly liable.

If I was the judge, and legally, I absolutely had to give her a sentence, I'd give her a day of probation, or fine her a penny or something like that.
