Free on iTunes: Vortex Demo (first free iPod game!)
![]() Category: Games Link: Free on iTunes: Vortex Demo (first free iPod game!) Description:: Apple today made history by adding an iPod game to the list of free downloads from the iTunes store. The game, “Vortex“, is being offered in “demo” mode for free. The Demo contains the first 2 fully playable levels of the 360° brick-bashing game (think Breakout, developed by Steve Wozniak, but rounder). The 22MB download requires a 5th generation iPod and software update 1.2 or later (we still have no idea why you can’t play these games in iTunes). Posted on MacBytes.com Approved by Mudbug |

Is anyone else getting this?
Edit: It worked the second time, sort of. I got the error again, but it took me to a Vortex page that time. However, I don't see any mention of a demo, just the full game. |

I am glad to see this because the only thing that holds me back from buying a game is because I am not sure how it'll handle. solitaire is nearly impossible to me on my ipod and i don't want to waste cash.

Things like this are always good. I don't think that I can play it on my Nano though.

Why?? Why would Apple release this kind of thing only for U.S. members?? This is something belonging completly to them, and them alone. It's not a free song, not a free tv show, not a free movie, not a free album cover - all of which come from a third party.
Why can't anyone on the planet buy this game if he wants? What's the big accounting constraint here? Oded S. |

Infinite Loop
The yellow strips that go down the side of the hole in the first level say "infinite loop." Nice touch. haha.

Great... But every firmware I've tried in the 1.2.x line has been buggy and not able to reliably play my music. (Either random crashes and restarts, or they just skip my purchased music entirely.)
I bought a game when they came out. I had fun with it. But I've reverted my firmware back so that I can actually use my iPod for what I bought it for: music. |

So it's only available through the US iTunes Store. Why am I no longer surprised or disappointed?

iPod Photo
Umm... because it's more than two years old (the 60GB, $599 version you are refering to, at least). Older processor, the lack of the graphics-processing capabilities of the 5G iPod, and a different screen resolution are all good reasons why new games aren't being developed for the iPod photo. Plus, I used to sell the things, and we never sold very many at all. I would assume that there are very few of them being used relative to newer iPods.

Free games from the iTunes Store, as well as free TV show episodes, free videos, and free movies are tracked in the Free iTunes Store TV/Videos/Movies/Games 2007 thread, maintained by forum members The Toon Master and KKKL.
Free music from the iTunes Store is tracked in the Free iTunes 2007 thread. In the first month of 2007, Apple has given away 1 game, 9 TV episodes, 2 movies, and 14 songs. |

So people will know there's a list of free games. They might want to bookmark it.
There's only a single game so far this year, but if Apple makes a regular habit out of issuing free games, the reference list can be a handy resource. |

I think this should be on PAGE 1 -- FREE is definitely big news.
