Google CEO Eric Schmidt as Temporary Steve Jobs Replacement?

Doug Kass of The Street has posted some tidbits he's heard from the trading desks and industry. According to this writeup, "these items have not been confirmed."

Quote:
I am also hearing that Google CEO Eric Schmidt has already begun low-level discussions with several Apple board members regarding his role as a possible temporary replacement to Steve Jobs should the options-backdating issues intensify at legal levels.
His previous column in early January claimed that Steve Jobs would be announcing a leave of absence, which has not yet come to be true.

I think a few people on here will spontaneously combust at the mere thought of a Steve replacement no matter how temporary!

I thought Eric already had a job. Unless Apple's going to buy Google (for $143 Billion)

Schmidt is already on Apple's board, no?

Sounds like a fine Steve-proxy to me ...

I'd rather see Al Gore take over as the Apple chief, and although more board members will vote for him, he will not win.

I don't trust The Street at all... they seem to talk out of their butts more than anything. While its an interesting idea, keep in mind this is page2.

5% down and finance the remainder in Japan at 0.250% per annum variable. Make payments from net proceeds and buy back stock (Apple and Google) like it is going out of style

General curiosity... if Jobs were forced out by law, he would of course give up his jet, his dollar a year, and other benefits/income. But would he by law be forbidden to consult with Apple on an unpaid basis?

That's what I'd expect him to do, despite inevtiable butting heads with the new CEO, since he's in it for the results more than the money.

He might become an unpaid "independent CEO" or iCEO.

Steve was already iCEO in 97 when he came back to Apple.

If anyone I would rather see Woz.

If he goes to prison, he may have no choice. Although I'm sure he would be happier introducing new products.

This years keynotes were the first ones I had ever seen in my life. When I watched the stream from Apple's website that night, I saw a man who really loved his job of showing off gadgets "from the future" so to speak . This year I'll be converting to Apple products across the line and I'd be proud to own a product created/developed/etc by someone who genuinely looked like he loved his job. Unlike Gates, when I see him he just looks....evil. Like he's almost trying to con people into buying his products.

Doug Kaas is again making up mischievous rumours in order to manipulate the stock price. He doesn't have any inside info at all and this story of his will have no more substance than his previous fiction about SJ stepping down.

Kaas keeps coming up with different theories why SJ will leave Apple, last month it was cancer, this month it's the SEC, any guesses for next month's reason ?

I'm just surprised that anybody takes this story at face value.

Sorry to Google

Sorry to anyone who disagrees, but Steve Jobs is Apple. History has shown that ... I hope that when Steve finally leaves (may it be many, many, many, many, many years from now), that Steve Jr. is found, otherwise we may have more issues as a company for we will truly stop "thinking different."
