Apple was at QuakeCon this year... According to this MacCentral article

The tournament play machines are brand-spanking-new 800MHz dual-processor Power Mac G4s equipped with GeForce3-based graphics cards and gobs of memory. The machines are running Mac OS X and a new, internal build of the Quake 3 Arena executable not yet available to the general public.

Here is a photo of the G4's

Great news. There was once a time when I wouldn't have put it past Apple to bring iMacs to QuakeCon, since they're the "gaming" macs. Really nice to see them being semi-intelligent about it. Macs have a reputation for not being powerful enough for the latest games, hopefully some more showings like this one will at least debunk that myth.

Post Mac Mice

Ah yeah, Mac has finally gotten a few key things together, like slapping a good graphics card into their otherwise fantastic computers... but anyone else notice that the mice in those pictures are Logitech optical MouseMan mice or something like that? C'mon apple, the Pro Mouse is without doubt the best looking mouse out there, but it has almost ZERO functionality. Please, buttons can be good, and the scroll wheel is a blessing. Work your design magic and create a mouse that's both nice looking and functional...

I've got more than a few grumbles about the various sacrifices that Apple makes to have their machines look nice... Like the mouse, and the fact that their keyboards are notorious for breaking. But I'll save that rant for another time.

I agree. The Pro Mouse looks and feels great, but I value a scroll wheel and second button over looks. Until Apple gets it's act together, it's a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer for me.

I'd also really appreciate it if Apple would concentrate on getting the dual800's to people who have been waiting for them for weeks, and not worry so much about QuakeCon until the users in line have been satisfied...

i see quite a few 17 crt monitors (actually all of the comps are hooked to them) are they going back on their phase-out decision? since crts are better for gaming and graphics?

Wink uh

Where exactly are you seeing Apple CRTs? All I'm seeing are 17" LCDs. Do you ever think? I thought I would finally register, and ask.

Ok...

So if apple is able to present some gaming stuff on these great dual800 machines why aren't they able to ship my dual800. It's a little bit disappointing to see the machine I want but still not have.

Hurry up apple.....

mac mice

I have always liked the way Mac mice tracked: very fast, smooth, and precise. Light years ahead of anything else out there (except maybe the NeXT). And I also have almost always liked the shape of Apple mice (except for the hockey puck, that was an abomination). But I also like having a right button and a scroller. So I bought a MacAlly "iSweetNet", which is their three button scroller USB mouse. It is very similar to the shape of the last Apple ADB mice, which I think was their pinnacle in mouse design. The scroller doesn't work as well as a Windows mouse scroller, cause it isn't integrated into the OS (you have to load a separate CDEV in OS9, and the scrolling is slow and choppy). But fortunately, OSX somehow supports the extra buttons without an extra driver! So the scrolling is much smoother in OSX, similar to a Win box. I guess the right button and scroller button are standardized in mice enough to make this happen. About damn time they put this in the OS...

As much as I want my Dual 800, it is good to see Apple confident enough in their hardware to show it off at QuakeCon.
Apple's mice do suck(they look great, but wtf good is that). This logitech optical wireless is the greatest mouse I have ever used. It has a rather high pricetag but it is worth it.

Heh. I hope you also are "MUTCH" better at optimizing pictures for web viewing. Your "doctoring" doubled the size of the image. Heh Heh.

Arrow Now that you mention it...

Hi people,

Can the addition of the second button and scroller wheel to the system in OS X (the future of the apple, and stuff..) mean they are planning to release a mouse with theese functions?

Or it's just me and my imagination?

That's a great point and thought, but you could also write it off and say that Apple is just trying to support hardware developers. I hope you're right and my counterpoint is wrong, though.

Yay

Apple's foot is into gaming, a place I wouldn't think they would be or care about. And giving their best macheines, now that is good. I would like to see them in my hands, but it's still good. Now why is apple using bith CRT's and LCD's? And if you really care you can get a decent mouse with 2 button's a track ball for a low enough price.

Heh, I'm not even going to comment on the slices.

Well I believe some of us would like to have a mouse ship with our computer that has more than one button, plus Apple's mice just look so darn nice, it'd be nice to have some more functionality added to the looks.

Hehe. I wasn't being serious. I was being extremely sarcastic. BIG misunderstanding here. My fault, I wasn't clear on it.
