You can use for your MBP the optical in, or a simple 3.5 mm to 2x RCA plug (analog). You can use this plug also for your iPod. When using analog you can't have cinema sound. Using the optical it should be possible, but I don't know if Apple supports it in its programs.
But you do have a couple of seconds delay in the sound. It would be hard if you are playing a DVD from your laptop and stream the sound through your speakers wireless using Airfoil... Also this will only be stereo sound, when using an optical cable you could (I believe) get 5.1.

Yes you can use that, I also use that to hook up my ipod and PB to my stereo. But you will only have stereo sound this way. When watching a DVD you don't have dolby.
