Free music

Is there a legal site where uncopyrighted music can be downloaded? I want to find some good music that has cultural influences outside the us that is uncopyrighted and free to listen to. Anyone have any recommendations or solutions?

Thanks

lots of nice concert stuff over at archive.org, also tons of material from the 78RPM era.

Yes, and another good place to look would be the Internet Archive. In fact, the Internet Archive would be even better.

There are quite a few. What you are looking for is probably closest to a Creative Commons/GPL license. Check these out:

http://www.legaltorrents.com/index.htm -- Large techno section, but various other types as well.

http://www.oggfrog.com/music/

http://creativecommons.org/audio/

http://www.jamendo.com/en/

http://www.soundclick.com/ -- Some of this music is Creative COmmons, but most is copyrighted. Still, there is a LOT of free music.

The Grateful Dead Internet Archieve - http://www.archive.org/details/GratefulDead

http://sonicsquirrel.net/ -- a net label

http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/articles/netlabels/ -- An article that makes mention of various netlabels
