Adding Text Picture in iPhoto

Ok.....someone please tell me that I can take a picture from my iPhoto library and add text to it and call it good. I don't know if I'm over thinking this or just failing to see where that option is but I would hope and pray that a program like that would have the foresight to have a "add text to photo" option.

Thanks,
SV

Sorry man, iPhoto is not an editing program for text and the like...you'll need something like Photoshop.

Interesting........so what is iPhoto good for except for selling Macs photo albums and books etc.
Can anyone give me a cheap in-expensive basic/general photo editor?
Thanks,

Thanks,
iPhoto can do all kinds of photo editing, as well as album organization, interaction with other iLife apps, etc. Just because you can't overlay some huge text on it doesn't mean it's not an editor.

If you want something free that will replace Photoshop, you might try Gimp, or Gimp+Seashore.

I don't know what your experience level is in "photo editing" but being able to label, put ownership rights, water marks etc is a BASIC operation for any software CLAIMING to be image editor. With that being said, iPhoto IS NOT an editor by industry standards.

Sounds like you are probably not the intended market for iPhoto.

That you use the term 'industry standard' is a giveaway that you are not an average home user.

Home users, those not interested in reselling, etc, are likely not to give a whit about watermarking and/or copyrighting their photos.

iPhotos ability to perform basic crop, color correction, and red-eye removal suits the average home user.

not possible. not the initial market strategy for iphoto...it's more 'photo organization' using keywords and arranged by date etc..

that said, i wonder if they might incorporate a basic text feature into the next version.

you'd think there would be a plugin app to take the date details and stamp the photos.

re: adding text to iphoto

If you want to add text in iphoto, or add watermarks, it is very simple to do... the text part is kinda basic, but the watermark, of which you can customize to your hearts content is very easy to use.

go to www.scriptsoftware.com
and look at their iwatermark software...
$20.00 and in a few minutes you are ready to go...

i have used it on many photos that i post to photobucket
for customers to look at and possibly buy from me...

heres a sample...
Thumb resize.

still not an iPhoto solution..

why not apple put a watermark function on iphoto.. not necessarily to add text but just to add a single line of txt through a function..

Because inevitably it would infuriate the market that it is intended for. iPhoto is based on a theme of simplicity so that the most basic Mac user can figure it out. Watermarking is not something they would need if they are using iPhoto. Plus imagine all the troubles users would encounter when they accidentally watermark a photo without making a duplicate in iPhoto then they have to re-add it to the library...etc.

Chances are if you have to do watermarking, you'll be doing more intensive editing, thus having Photoshop. Not to mention that if iPhoto had more features it would steal from the Aperture market.

Not even Lightroom can do that without a third party plugin.

Adding text in iPhoto

I use the "edit in external photo editor" function in iPhoto. Obviously this requires a separate graphics program. I use Pixelmator which I think was $20 but I know there are many free programs (GIMP, etc).

I just right click on the photo I want to watermark in iPhoto, choose "Edit in external editor" it will open the image in Pixlemator, I can paste my watermark then hit save and it's back in iPhoto with the watermark.

With the newest version, you can turn any photo into a greeting card. Select a photo, then click on + button in the bottom-left corner of your iPhoto window. Then click Card and choose the card you want to use.

This clip just somewhat helped me out. Now I'm trying to figure out how to choose a specific font though.

Lightroom can add a watermark without a 3rd party plug-in - there's a checkbox for it on the export screen. The built-in functionality is extremely limited and I use a 3rd party plug-in instead, but it's there.

After you type your text go to tools in Preview and select Show Fonts or "Command T". Then highlight your text and select the font and size you want.

Adding text or Wordart to iphoto

Save photo to desktop
Drag into Word
Place Wordart or text over photo
Use Grab software on your mac to capture picture as Tiff
Add photo back into your iphoto library

Works great with no degradation of photo!

Thanks for that mcink, I was stuck with a photography project deadline and had a look at iwatermark, ended up buying it (most useful software is way too expensive, especially when converting US dollars to NZ dollars)
It is fast and intuitive, really great to use.

This is completely off topic but am I the only one wondering what the guy in the corner of your sample photo is doing? He appears to be answering quite a substantial call of nature...

type to photo

It can be done, because I did it - now I can't figure out how. I do recall choosing "annotate".
It won't let me upload it but I posted it on facebook - you can see it at Project 365.

Here is a link.

iphoto gives a advanced edit option and this tools even more useful. but through this option you can change the size and strength of the picture easily and you want to furture editing like insert text in picture then you can use image editing software like photoshop, coraldraw etc.
