hey guys and gals. Alright... There is a message that i'm getting about my startup disk being full, and how i need to clear some apps and whatnot. how do i go about doing so, and i'm assuming the startup disk is my hard drive on my desktop? help would be needed greatly and greatly appriciated.

What kind of applications do you have installed? The biggest files you'd normally have otherwise would be video and audio.

Professional applications have been known to often be very bloated. Are you using any?

What size is your hard drive?

no, no photoshop. i use iphoto.hehe i have adium, candybar, shapeshifter(currently running), limewire, visage(currently useless), hmm..no quite sure what all i have. haha that's about it. i have a 60 gig HD, i think. i went cheap and chose the standard. :-/

Well, if you select the hard disk's icon from the desktop, you can right-click or press Cmd-I to see how full it is. But if you're suddenly getting this message, then something fairly rapidly filled your computer. Here are culprits:

1) If you are using any kind of video editing software (iMovie, FCP, etc), occasionally people report that they somehow end up with a 40 gig movie file or something they didn't realize they created.

2) Ditto for audio editing software.

3) The next major possibility is that Limewire is doing this to you -- so go through the folders where it puts files and make sure you don't for some reason have a lot more files than you thought.

4) Otherwise the likely culprit is that a log file or a swap file caused this. In this case, the easiest to explain way to deal with this is to get Onyx and use it to clear caches and logs.

Hm, that sounds odd i recommend downloading an application that lets you know what things on your harddrive are taking up the most room. You seem to have a bloated file.

If you use imovie imported files swell and any imovie project (Or any video editing software) cn becomae huge. Check what you have downloaded in limewire as well.

Edit: mkrishnan beat me and went more indepth. I would recomend using whatsize however.

Good luck. :)

WOAH. 38.6 GB of music/video!! is there some way i can put some of the more "hefty" items onto my external HD?(also 60 GB, by the way)

I have that problem and I use photoshop

Are you using Photoshop and getting this message?

I have start up space disappearing before my very eyes and I use Photoshop, and was using Photoshop when it started to happen. I had 6gb of free space and now 0kb.
