Web design/color selection

I have to do a web site for a group of friends of mine. I asked them for a couple of color cobinations for the group to chose from, and, instead chose the colors that one of the group members was wearing for a row of buttons - an olive/grey base, wand white text with nay blue rollover text. I say it's a bad idea and will be hard to read/look ugly. I decided that I would do what they want me to do, but will have a few mockups with better colors, just in case they flip and try to take it out on me.

Does anyone have any suggestions regarding what colors I should use. I want to keep it to three or four colors, maybe five at the most. The body of the page will be black text on white, but special elements, buttons, dividers, borders for special things, etc. need color.

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

are all people with a good design sence. At least they post like they know what they are dooing and their sites look good. They should be able to offer some good advice. You look like a Stanley Kubrick fan. Perhaps you should look to him for some insperation, or perhaps the cover art from the books of Anthony Burgess .

If you want to be vision friendly, take a look at this sites advice.

My view is keep is simple and pleasing. And don't steal picts or direct link picts like I just did.

I'd suggest buying a book on colour theory... ;)

Also you can purchase 'Pallette Books" from Design Bookshops, these are like Pantone Swab books, that show different colours in different configuarations etc etc... Also gives you the RGB, Hex value etc... Totally invaluable for designers.

Maybe take a partime 'Traditional' design course as well, one that teaches the basics of colour theory! :) So many people lack the basics... It's good to have a solid grounding!

I'll suggest a few.

The idea they have, from what i'm visualizing, could work. But i'd stay away from dark blues with olive (as you can see) and go more earthy.

It would help a bit if we knew what they did. :) let us know!
 
Thanks a lot, everyone. I'm just getting in to it, so the color theory book sounds like a good idea.

I actually said a red and white, but they didn't like it. Once it have the site up, I'll be sure to post a link.

I'm doing layouts today, and images this saturday. The final design should be up on sunday or monday.

color

you should really look into color fundamentals. i know of a great course, but it's on a corporate internal site :(

go to a book store. flip through some color fundamentals books, go outside and look at natural color combos.

as far as web colors go...the less the better. using lots of subdued color or greys really make any color (even just a little color) pop out at you. to much color is a bad thing.

check these for nice color combos:

and of course there's my site (which i desperately need to work on, but i need to fish my album first...argh!)

Get the colour swabs as well if you can, they're not cheap, but are really superb and will open your design work up to colours you never knew exsisted... ;) :)
