Mail has just fallen on its ass. There was some warning about mailbox folder being full and then it shut down (it had been running for the past 24hrs or so). I went to restart and I get the launch window for a new install of mail and asking me to set up an account.

I restarted the mac thinking it would sort out my lost accounts. After restart the same thing happens.

Is that my mail M.I.A. then? or is there a way to get it back?

Is Mail the only app doing this? Your email should still be stored in a folder named Mail within your Home folder's Library. As a start, I'd make an archive of this folder and keep it on your Desktop as backup. Now, can you open individual emails from within this folder (not the one on your Desktop)?
