Odd AI Happenings.

It seems the admins of AI were running a little puzzle for users of the AI forum last night.

It began with this:

which appeared at the top of the forum page. The hole with "Gollum" is/was new.

Read this thread:
http://forums.appleinsider.com/showt...threadid=25673

The odd picture seems to have to do something with '10.2.7'

Personally I doubt it, but it was funny nontheless. One of the mods kept editing my posts the instant I posted, so anything I said in the thread was useless. It was all good fun though.

[edit: Oh, the image used to link to a "you're and idiot" flash file hosted on one of the mods' website. That made me doubt that this thing has anything to do with Apple and that the admins and mods were having a bit of fun at our expense. But the image currently links to this bizzare song.]

[second edit: many AI users now think that the admins of AI know something and that the news story about the 'G5' is indeed accurate.]

[third edit: original "smeagol" thread at AI deleted.]

Brad, one of the forum admins says that Smeagol/golem is the codename for 10.2.7 and that it is required for the 970s to run.

Yep. That's it.

Personally I think it is a very odd codename.

Where does "Smeagol/Golem" come from? I think "Gollum" is a character in LOTR, but a "Golem" is ... DELETED. The spelling should be Gollum.

Smeagol was "Gollum's" real name before he became known for his unusual swallowing sound after many centuries with the ring.

Golem is likely the word Tolkien drew from when he named the character:

Golem - 1: (Jewish folklore) an artificially created human being that is given life by supernatural means 2: a mechanism that can move automatically [syn: automaton, robot]

Hmmm...now it seems the original thread is unaccesable by normal AI forum users.

This was posted in another thread at AI:

Quote:
Well, not specifically for 10.2.7, but for "code name for an update to 10.2 ... that lets it run on the 970".
This was in regards to the 'Smeagol/Gollum' code-name.

It makes sense that Apple would have a new update for the new machines. That in itself isn't all that odd.

The way the AI went about doing this was - do they usually play games with the readers?

I wonder if arn would ever let us do that here? But then you need to all that extra time to set it up. Things are obviously so over there, eh?

I just thought the 'Smeagol/Gollum' name was odd. Why that specific name?

As far as I can tell, it's only happened once when the AI forums were upgraded to vB.

That would be fun. Though with the many members we have here, it would have to be a pretty challenging puzzle. If I recall correctly, a few MR users got pretty far on the BMW puzzle/game.

Yeah, AI was getting pretty slow. I think they did this partially to liven up the forums.

Smile

This bizzare song is actually a jingle from an old ad for Vegemite - a famous Australian sandwich spread made by Kraft.

Absolutely no idea what it might have to do with Apple though.
