AGP video card for PowerMac G5 Dual 2.7GHz?

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for a new AGP video card for the dual 2.7GHz G5 that I have? It came with ATI 9650 w/256MB RAM, but I find it really lacking in speed for games like World of Warcraft.

Well, no. The other possibilities are the 9800 and the X850. If you're going to upgrade, though, you might as well upgrade to the best, so I'd recommend skipping the 9800 and going for the X800 or, ideally, the X850. But that's kinda tough to find since they were BTO options only, but sometimes you can find them on eBay or wherever. There's not a massively huge difference between the X800 and X850 anyway.

Does anyone know of an "in stock" source (besides ebay) to acquire a Radeon X800 XT (Mac Edition)? They seem to be very difficult to find these days.

i bought mine through academic superstore... but that was a while ago. mmm its not in stock on the ATi store. I've been thinking of selling mine as I'd like to upgrade to a Mac Pro soon. I don't think that any stores carry this card anymore. Not many carried it when it was readily available.
 
NVidia options

You could also try the 6800 Ultra. That was real big when it came out, but I think its a little noisier. There may be more of those about than the ATi options.

Your options are the X800 XT (bought mine from buy.com), the 6800 GT, and the 6800 Ultra. The GT is slower than the ATI, and while the ultra is slightly faster than the ATI, your only reason to get it would be if you wanted to push 2 30" screens.
 
I'd go with the X800XT.

IF you can find one Apple sold an OEM Radeon X850XT that offers better performance than the X800XT. They are relatively rare though, since they were never offered retail - but they are the fastest AGP card ever officially released for the Mac.

The 6800GT and Ultra are good performers as well though.

I thought the OP was going to buy new card, so the only card that was/is sold in a box is X800XT

GT is slower than X800, but ultra is about the same. Its about 3x the size of X800 though and cost 100$ for when it came out...

Also, I believe X800XT could drive 2 30" displays, or am I wrong?

BTW, X850XT is not much faster than 800, and you can easily overclock 800 to 850 speeds.
