PS3 on a normal TV (not high-definition)

I am buying a PS3, but I don't have an HDTV. I only have a Sony 29" TV.

My question is: How will PS3 games look in this TV? Will they have jagged edges due to the scaling down of the TV analysis?

If someone has a PS3 connected to a TV of the old generation, any comment would be appreciated.

I'm guessing it'll be the same as the Xbox360: scales video down, and you'll see virtually no jaggies, but the image quality will be severely "smoothed". In other words, everything will be much smoother, and text will probably be extremely small and hard to read. But I've noticed that the PS3 automatically adjusts the XMB GUI according to what resolution you have it set at. Games on the otherhand, is dependent on the developer adjusting the fonts, etc.

So, in essence, it's going to be wise to go HDTV sooner or later. I mean, unless you're only playing PS1/PS2 games and watching only DVDs on it. But you're not buying a $600 console just to do that are you? I'd hope not.

Why not? Games are not enough of a reason to you??

I personally think you will enjoy the PS3 even on a SD TV. I played my 360 for 2 months on an 26 inch SD TV and it was OK.

But seeing the games in HD really drops your jaw.

If its a hen - egg problem you are facing: buy the ps3 now and buy a HDTV later as soon as you have the money.

If it helps, we have PS3 'on display' at work that's connected to a 'normal' widescreen 19" LCD TV using the AV scart lead from the box.

I can't say that I've noticed any jaggies, scaling issues or anything else.

it doesn't looks that bad... my pal has his on a regular TV and while it isn't nearly as gorgeous as an HDTV image, it's not really that bad. the hype has been overdone a bit i think. the graphics still appear "next gen". Although, i will say that i have noticed hooking my 360 up to a standard def tv causes gameplay issues for me since on HDTV you can see much smaller and distant details (like the top of a crouching players helmet in COD3 or Vegas from a distance) so there are actually gameplay advantages to HD. and make no mistake, it does look exponentially better in HD. especially with good framerates.

But if you plan to eventually add a monitor with VGA input or an HDTV, I wouldn't let it stop you from enjoying next gen games... once the PS3 gets some that is.

Good luck!

I pretty much agree with technocoy. i was worried if i was going to waste money getting a PS3 without a HDTV, but i play games more for the gameplay - not the graphics. I figure when i'm ready to go full HD (cable, gaming, movies, etc), then i'll get a a better TV. Till then, i'm not at all dissappointed with the graphics/gameplay with my ps3.

I agree that you don't need Uber graphics to play the newest game. I love old movies that have been restored, and have a fancy HDMI dvd player but just use the S video because that is what I have on my tv, and wires, and it works just fine. But I am wondering what kind of hook up you are using, the Y cable, S video, component? I dont think anyone asked what you actually are using.

The PS3 was made to play in HD.

I have a SDTV and a PS3 and I love it. It is definitely a step up graphics wise from my old PS2. I got it because I wanted to play all the new games (Motorstorm, Resistance). I have no regrets.

There are a few instances where text is a little difficult to read, but nothing I consider a deal breaker. The only problem is it will make you want a HDTV really really bad.... I am buying one next month because of it

Haha indeed it will make you want that HDTV. The PS3 was made for HDTV, not SDTV. I went with a CRT based HDTV near the end of 05, as they still provide the BEST picture quality. And they're incredibly cheap, if you can find one that is...Nowadays, the market is flooded with LCDs and Plasmas, which are generally 2-3 times more expensive than CRTs.

Anyhow, I tried my PS3 on an SDTV AFTER playing it on an HDTV, and to me, it's completely unbearable UNLESS you're playing old games or watching DVDs. HDTV is the way to go now. The main thing is the 16:9 ratio aspect of HDTV. Those black bars are hideous on SDTV...

Its not all bad, I played R:FoM on a 27" SDTV for a few weeks when I was at my gf's place in Ontario (they didn't have HDTV *ow* no 5.1 *ow* no wireless internet *oww* a 486 *O.W.*) and it was decent. HD blows it away but for playing games I had no problem.

true that... but we were spoiled BEFORE trying it on HDTV, which makes a difference I think.

And then when you do go HDTV, you'll be even more spoiled. Hell I've been playing PC games on my HDTV even before the 360 and PS3. There's just no way you can go back after going HD, and it's totally worth every penny spent.

It will be fine...I mean its a lot nicer on an HDTV, but its not a huge deal. I've play an Xbox 360 on only SD and PS3 on both HD and SD..and overall HD is very nice.

My friend has a PS3 and Sony Bravia(50''ish) and it looks really good...like "wow HD is so the future"..that good, but I live with my Wii, and PS3 looks better then a Wii on SD, so you'll be fine.

Get a PS TWO or a 360 if you have no HDTV. My reasoning is based on the games. And also since the 360 is much cheaper than the PS3.

I have a PS3 (don't ask why) and I do have an HDTV and it is great. But ultimately I have no excitement to buy any other games. Resistance: Fall of Man is all I have, and all there is to have. It's a fantastic game.

So baiscly don't get a PS3...the Xbox 360 can output in HD, why should he buy that instead? It will look fine on a SDTV...now either or not its a good or bad system, thats another thread, but try and keep this one clean.

Haha you guys are silly. Anyhow, go for the PS3 if you really desire it. It's got a great line-up of games coming up soon. You won't be disappointed, playing it either on SDTV or HDTV. Then you can save up money and get an HDTV eventually. The way I see it, it can only get better. The PS3 is your starting point.

Mainly cause its cheaper and has good games available for it. It doesn't have much to do with the HD portion of the discussion.

My previous post was clean wasn't it?
