ffmpegX is highly recommended - it's a frontend to free UNIX programs, but if you like a nice GUI like I prefer, it's a great program.

I am in a similar situation, but i couldn't get it to work.

Open the .avi in QuickTime, go to File->Export and choose "Movie to Toast Video CD".

If you can't get the AVI to work in Quicktime, make sure you have the latest DivX codec installed, assuming it's one of those DivX in disguise as AVI movies.

ok the avi file is 691 MB but quicktime says its too big for a roxio movie, can i turn it into a DVD with dvd studio pro. if i can what bitrate is best with an avi file thats 102 mins long and 691MB in size? im thinking around 5MB/sec.
