How do I put a 3rd Harddrive in quicksilver 867 ?

The title basically says it all. 🙂 What do I need and how do I do it?

Think dummies book style. Thanks guys.

Step 1: buy 120g hd off of ebay
Step 2: open computer
Step 3: ???

i assume this is not the mirrored drive doors version?

i can't give you the dummy's guide (i'll let someone who knows more specifics do that), but i know you would need a pci hdd controller (or something like that)... as the computer is set up only to take 2 hard drives.. i found this out the hard way about my dual 800, ie. post hard drive purchase. 😉
 
i have an quicksilver with 3 drives in it...NOT the MDD....

you will need a nice screwdriver and a lot of patience!
the hard drive will need to be put in the zip drive bay mount. so here's what you need to do...

1. buy the hard drive
2. open the case
3. disconnect the IDE and power supply to the optical drive
4. unscrew all screws holding the optical drive harness in place
5. carefully remove the harness with the drive in it
6. make sure your jumpers are set to "cable select"
7. slide the hard drive in the zip drive slot, ports facing the back of course
8. you will need to hold the drive in all the way back and connect the cables (notice that there is an extra end on each of the optical drive's cables...use the last spot for the hard drive)
9. connect the optical drive's cables
10. screw the harness back into place
11. close case and reboot
12. open disk utility and partition the drive
13. enjoy your third hard drive
 
oh, my bad. it's cause i have a zip drive....

keep in mind that if you have a hard drive on the same cable as the optical drive, it will be slowed down (or so i've heard)...
 
It will be slowed down quite a bit if it is on the CD cable. Your best bet is to get a PCI HDD controller to use the 3rd drive. Then the book that comes with your powermac shows you how to mount upto 4 drives. So just consult the book for mounting instructions, but i really recommend a PCI card.

i use my third drive for movies and software back ups. sure it takes a while to load up, but once it's been accessed, it works just great.

I use a Sonnet Tempo 133 , in my Quicksilver. Very easy to install, and is invisible to the rest of the hardware, meaning it doesn't break anything.

As for a drive, any IDE/ATA drive up to 120 GB would be simplest. Though an IDE/ATA 133 drive would make the best use of the new Tempo card.
 
i would agree with both the other suggestions. Defintely get a 8mb cache drive, they do make a sizable difference, and i have never used a Sonnet card but have heard only good things about them.
