Apple Sells 100 Millionth iPod

Apple announced via a press release today that it has sold its 100 millionth iPod. The first iPod was sold five and a half years ago, in November 2001, and since then Apple has introduced more than 10 new iPod models, including five generations of iPod, two generations of iPod mini, two generations of iPod nano and two generations of iPod shuffle.

Quote:
“At this historic milestone, we want to thank music lovers everywhere for making iPod such an incredible success,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iPod has helped millions of people around the world rekindle their passion for music, and we’re thrilled to be a part of that.”
The iPod has also sparked an unprecedented ecosystem of over 4,000 accessories made specifically for the iPod that range from fashionable cases to speaker systems, and more than 70 percent of 2007-model US automobiles currently offer iPod connectivity.

Quote:
“I take my running shoes and my iPod with me everywhere,” said Lance Armstrong, seven-time Tour de France champion. “I listen to music when I run. Having my music with me is really motivating.”

pretty amazing, I still remember friends thinking I was nuts paying so much for an MP3 player, only to see them later buy their own, and one for all their kids, etc. iPods rock!

100 millionth iPod. That's cool - now start cranking out computers that people actually want to see.

We've gone about 6 months and the only "new computer" we've seen was a dual quad-core processor machine that very few people will buy....

Give me Leopard! Give me the new iMac! Give me new Macbooks!

Yeah, just like the DRM free announcement that came on the heels of Apples DRM free music. MS just said they would sell it soon, not that they even had them in the stores yet. Tomorrow MS will announce that they will sell 100 million Zunes by the end of the year.

I've never had an iPod. I dont like music when Im walking around, I feel like I am missing out on the outside world if I am in my own little world like that. I listen to music all the time around the house though, then its OK because the inside of my house is boring.

This is great!

The iPod is what got me to buy my first OS X system. I had been a Mac classic user for years, however I wanted to experience iTunes and the iPod in their native settings (Mac OS X), I really liked it, and haven't looked back since!

The iPod Halo is a great thing, I wish there was concrete evidence showing how many thousands of Mac systems have been sold because of the iPod.

I have purchased (some as gifts) 6 iPods.

Thread 500. And really, you never know if something is going to succeed or fail until it does, in my opinion. Which is why, though I do criticize those who say the iPhone will fail drastically for reason X or Y, I don't yell out that it will definitely succeed either.

100 million iPods is a lot though, and it makes me worry about the environment: how many have been thrown away? (I'm not only worried about the chemicals in them, but the space they take up as well).

I just had a crazy thought: say out of the 100,000,000 iPods sold, 50,000,000 have been thrown away. What if all those were used to create a supercomputer?
