I wonder what the TCO will be on these dells over the four year lease vs. if they had gone with Macs again. I'm sure we'll never actually find out if it ends up being over 200 grand.

I'm sure they will all be running ubuntu and open source software to save costs as well.

Yep, the time and effort of migrating between platforms is going to chew through that $200K up-front savings in no time, and support costs will be higher over the life of the lease.

On the other hand, while it makes some sense that Apple doesn't compete in the low-end loss-leader market segments, they really have got to offer up some cheaper products for the education market. The 17" iMacs and MacBooks are great machines for the money, but their price tags are still too high.

I wouldent complain. My High School is running crazy old IBM's. The JUST Got win XP last year. The average specs on them are as follows:

P4 - 2.2ghz
256mb ram
20gig hdd
12mb on board video.

i'd take a dell to that any day. or better yet, a mac!
