Power Mac G5 Help!! Freezes up and fans are on high
I have this Power Mac G5 and every now and then it'll freeze up, the fans will go full blast, and the screen will go black. It's not even when I put a heavy load on it.
I usually just hold the power button down and do a hard shut down. Does anyone know why this G5 keeps doing this? Should I re-seat the ram and GPU? Thanks for any help given. |

Try zapping the pram and is your PowerMac G5 one of the models listed in this repair program?
Did you add any ram recently? If you did, put the original ram back. One more thing you could do is run the Hardware Test from the Install Disc and see what results come up from the Hardware Test. It could also be a hard drive failure, so try repairing the disc using Disc Utility from the Install Disc. Last edited by dartzorichalcos; Apr 24, 2007 at 03:48 PM. |

Do you have any USB peripherals other than the mouse and keyboard? Does it happen when you're in a certain program or is it random?
Have you checked what your log says. Sometimes the log will point to what the kernel panic is from. |

Hi.
I had this happening when I used an iBook as an external drive (Transfer mode), and the battery got empty. The iBook fell asleep, so I unplugged it (from FW). That caused the G5 to freeze, and the fans started blowing like crazy. Maybe you have a faulty drive somewhere? I guess the internal drive could have a hibernation/spindown problem. Some drives get problems spinning up when they get old. My recomendation would be to back up all your data A.S.A.P. , and get a new drive. Cheers |
