If I'm correct in thinking that this software takes your ethernet connection and distributes it out through your wifi connection as a hotspot, then what exactly does this do that OSX can't already?

the organization behind FON manages billing and user authentication software thus allowing 3 types of users:
1) those who share wifi without charging, getting free wifi in exchange
2) those who share wifi for a fee
3) those who use other people's wifi at a fee
