Hello everyone...

I am trying to use microsoft messenger for mac, latest version 6.0.2 but it always gives me the same error message when trying to log in, "sign in to microsoft messenger failed because the service is not available or you may not be connected to the internet."

Now i am sure i have internet access and i am sure that the service is working cause i use fire as an alternative. however i would prefer to use msn as its feature set is i think superior than that of fire.

What is even more interesting is that when i try to use messenger from university it has no problem in accessing the service so there is nothing wrong with the program as well. Thanks for any help

Just a suggestion, but the ADIUM program is a far more superior messenger program. It'll allow MSN, AOL, Yahoo, and a few others. You may want to look into it instead of messing with msn's messenger. Just a thought. Good luck!:D

This sounds like it's a port blocking / router issue, although Messenger should be able to default back to port 80, at the worst.

Easiest way to test this is to directly connect by bypassing your router, and try it on another internet connection. If it works there then you have your answer.

i guess it is my home internet connection that is the problem, probably between the router and the modem as you pointed out, cause on other locations it works. thanks esaldana817 i just downloaded adium and i am willing to give it a try. its strange however that microsoft's offering does not manage to get online when other programs find it so easy.

Plug the computer directly into the modem and see what happens.

I use MSN Messenger for Mac and I get that error message on occasion as well. It usually happens when the service goes down for whatever reason.

I was having same issue

I was having this same frustrating issue, and what finally solved it was the following: At the top of the MSN messenger sign-in window it will say either "personal" or "corporate" contacts. In my case it was "corporate". Go to View, and choose "personal contacts". This will prompt you to sign in separately. For some unknown reason it let me in - and now I always make sure that I'm in the "Personal" platform. Hope this helps!

^^ Corporate MSN uses private servers -- if you don't have a corporate Windows Live server, yes, of course, you cannot log into that.

There seem to have been several threads in the past few days about this issue. In many of them, both the official and non-official clients don't work (Adium doesn't support MSN's corporate functionality). I wonder what's going on. I've never personally experienced this type of problem.

One more thing to try is to open system preferences -> network and delete the "location" you are using and/or switch to a new or automatic location. I've never really understood what this does, but it seems to occasionally resolve this issue.
