Interesting. Although this data would be a lot more compelling if there was some actual information about point or cumulative precedence or about incidence of this problem.

I want to know how atypical my still fully functional and lovable 40-month-old iBook compares to the mean. And what the chances are it could fail in this way at some point.

I had an iBook G4 which died after warraty expired. I got the freezing screen thing. Then I received insurance money with which I used as aid to an iMac. I do feel that there was a problem with iBook logic boards and I'm glad this is coming to light.

Once a problem is shown to be a real widespread defect, Apple often extends free coverage beyond the warranty, and even reimburses people for past repairs. Hopefully they'll do the same here, since this does sound like a real issue. Even if it affects a small minority, that minority should get their problem fixed.

I completely agree. It'd be nice if Apple's newfound transparency with policy endeavors would spill over into these types of issues. Instead interested parties have to look at Apple's support board and see how many views a topic has.

That's ridiculous at best.
