what's the os x equivalent to visual studio c++? i remember someone telling me, but i totally forgot. also, is there a gcc/g++ compiler that is small without too many unnecessary things in it for os x? thanks.

Try Project Builder / Interface Builder and the rest of the developer tools. They come FREE with every Mac and copy of OSX - or you can download them from connect.apple.com

These also install gcc (with the C, Obj-C and C++ compilers).
