LED MacBook Pro Update in June?

ThinkSecret claims that Apple has indeed placed an order for 15.4-inch LED backlit displays targeting a June announcement at WWDC.

According to the rumor site, Apple placed an order for over 100,000 15.4-inch LED displays in April for a delivery schedule in May. This would provide adequate lead in time for a June ship date. Meanwhile, orders for 13.3-inch LED screens are reportedly being considered for 3rd Quarter roll-out.

This report echoes a similar timeframe to a Digitimes report from yesterday, but targets the MacBook Pro specifically at WWDC in June.

According to our Buyer's Guide the MacBook Pro has seen 196 days since their last update, with a historic average of 182 days between updates.

This would be nice....but I wish it were sooner.

There hasn't been an update in months.

Wouldn't be the first time the 15'' got an update before the 17''.

Great! I am about to order the next revision in June when it comes out Excellent!

I wonder though if the quality of the panels differ a lot; anybody got some more information on that?
Quote:
Sources report the displays will come from a number of makers simply because availability is tight as Asian manufacturers begin to ramp up production of the brighter, lower-power and environmentally-friendly displays.
Apparently Samsung's 15.4" panel will be capable of 1440x900, which does not really seem to offer the rumoured resolution independance feature in Leopard.

Quote:
The 15.4 inch LED backlit LCD will be capable of a 1440 x 900 resolution while being 5.8 mm thin. To add on to it, the power consumption will only be eating 3.1W, making it a suitable panel for future laptops. Covering 45% of NTSC color gamut, the 15 inch model will also manage 262k colors while holding a 330 cd/m2 brightness.

That's going to be replaced with a 12" MBP. Didn't you hear?

This makes the most business sense for Apple to release the MBP first, even though I have been looking forward to a new MB. They shouldn't be too far behind.

Don't they usually update the MacBook Pro first, then a few months later update the MacBook?

I know they never upgrade the Mac mini. j/k

Is there any chance they could use LED screens in the new iMac?

Absolutely. However, because one of the perks of LED lit screens is improved power management they are likely making the MBP a higher priority, and it is possible (though perhaps unlikely) that the next iMac revision may not have the LED lit screens yet.

Manufacturer and/or supplier reports have been among the least trustworthy sources of rumors over the last four years; right down there with macosrumors. In my humble opinion such rumors ought to be Page 2 material.

So is there any other advantages of LCD besides Power Management? What are the expected gains in battery life?

I hope this is true, I'm ordering a new laptop on June 11th whether they announce new ones or not (I sold my G5 to buy it, and I can only survive on this AGP Powermac G4 350MHz for so long )

I'm really looking forward to the possibility of better battery life with these backlights, it seems like I'm always losing power at the critical moment when I'm in the archives.

Great, now I'm making a list of my things to sell so that I can afford one.
Higher resolution LED backlit screens with a nicer GPU and the list above is a droolworthy dream machine IMHO.

Yeah, in Apple's press release they said they'd update their entire product line as the availability/cost of larger LED back-lit panels improved. It wasn't clear to me which "larger" panels they thought might slow things down, but 24" is pretty large.

I suppose it is possible that the 17" iMac could get an LED screen before the 20" or 24" if Apple could get them at a decent price.

I don't think that is relevant anymore. Most Macs are many months overdue since their historic average. Especially the mini and the iMac. Of course the WWDC is an good event to release MBP's, more so than consumer Macs. But I wouldn't really trust the historical averages anymore lately.

17" MBP update too?

So if the 15" is gonna be updated with its LED screen. Will the 17"er have any updates too at the same time even if its not its screen? Processor, graphics card etc?

I need two new iMacs and a MacBook Pro, if Apple would like to hurry it up just a smidge, that would be GREAT
