Which PowerMac?

I have been waiting for the G5 for a long time, and I have been saving up for a long time, I only wanted to spend about $2000 on the machine, but I really want to 1.8Ghz G5. What do you guys think?

1.8 good machine except for video card, 1.6 overpriced, dual 2 gig fantastic for the pro who can afford it.

yeah it seems like the 1.8 is the best choice ... it also depends on when you need it. I know th 1.6 is shipping but is the 1.8 too.

MacManiac1224 doesn't sound like a "pro who can afford it". Unless you are going to do some really heavy duty processing, it might be better to get the 1.6GHz and spend the difference on RAM (or add RAM later when you can afford to). What makes you think you need the higher speed?

make sure, if you order spend the extra 50 dollars to get the ati 9600 over the nvidia 5200. its way better and nvidas fx line has been a flop.

besides speed..the larger hard drive might make a different.

oh yeah...the developer prices on the systems are pretty reasonable.
check em out and try and get yourself in it.

Ram and HDs are generally easy and cheap to get, soooo looking at the retail box....

First two machine choices...

Do the extra RAM slots make a difference to you?

Do you want PCI or PCI-X slots?

Last two machine choices...

Do you want 1 or 2 CPUs?

ATI or Nvidia?

Some would say video cards are cheap and easy, but there's that nagging ADC port that has always made them expensive with the Apple OEM Retail mark on the side.

Don't buy the 1.6... It's a ripoff for what you get. If you can afford it, at least get the 1.8, as you get:

* Faster memory: dual DDR400 instead of dual DDR333, for a total of 800 mhz. memory bus instead of 666 mhz...

* 8 memory slots instead of 4

* PCI-X instead of just PCI

The 1.8 is only $400 more, and that price can be dropped by $200 if you really need to by switching out the Superdrive for a combo drive.

depending on what you do you may not need the modem either but then you give up faxing support in panther
