G5 Performance and Folding

Saw this, wonder if its applicable to folding

http://www.apple.com/powermac/performance/

The performance boost would be beyond huge - one dual 2.0 would process several WUs a day!

I'd imagine the dual 2 Ghz may be as fast as a single 3.06 Ghz P4. Folding isn't optimized very well for PPC. The SSE instruction set in the P4 has had a lot attention from the Folding people for optimization. Who knows, maybe the next version of FAH they'll actually make it faster...but they have to spend their time where the majority of results will come from.

Folding may not be optimized for PPC, but a faster processor means more WU's, hands down.

Yeah, I don't think that graph = up kicking ass.

Plus apple cheated on the SPEC score by turning off hyper-threading... :-/

Why would HT have increased the SPEC score. That only decreases the processor load for a specific application. For example, with HT 1 application can only get up to 50% of the processor. Without HT, it can get up to 100%. I think this actually is a better idea of the speed.

i thought apple doesnt do spec scores, i thought the computers are sent off and done somewhere else that apple doesnt have any control over.

I think you are very correct about that. I thought that SPEC was supposed to be something that you couldn't skew.

Duh duh duh!
Um... well kinda 'skewed' the results.
But I do hate this guy because in his 'hate mail' he blast people for stupid comments or when people have legit questions he blows them off.

Guy is a total jerk, oh well...

25% valid points, it anit the fastest, they could have stated 'one of the fastest' and be correct, but apple hasss to overstate.

Like when they had photoshop tests where apple won (G4), again, it wasn't fair.

go read slashdot's latest topic in apple section, you may find it interesting.

I did, it didn't impress me.

He explained it, he did a fine job, and he defended the company that made the test.

Nice article, iJon. It's nice to see /. and Apple responding to people's concerns so quickly, and so well.

i thought it was interesting that they thought he cheated by not using hyperthreading, but said it just lowered their score, and said they would happily do it. Slashdot people are tough people to please, and many of them are having good things abotu the g5. the only argument ive heard is that "if half life 2, battlfield, raven shield and their other games would run on it, then they would consider one." so at least they have a legitimate reason for not buying.

wow I can't wait to get my g5. Not sure if I want to fold on it though. I like having all my CPU free. Probably when i'm not using the computer. We'll see.

Even if you're not using 100% CPU all the time? Folding doesn't use all the CPU, just the idle cycles you're not using anyway.

You're not going to tell me that you can run your Macs at 100% all the time, are you?

(sorry for the crude joke, scem0 in advance)
No Rower scem0 will say that the G5 Like his PC is going to OverHeat, Especially because it doesn't have enough Fans 9 IS NOT ENOUGH!!!! MWHAHAHAH!

scem0, I'm totally kidding man, we would love any CPU to join the team.
Especially a G5.

Folding is the lowest priory, uses just the cycles your CPU itself doesn't on other tasks.

nah, its ok. I was kind of asking for it.

But I don't want to have any of my CPU taken up by it..... only when I am sleeping, or away from the computer.

lol, I'm going to install a couple more fans to make sure it doesn't overheat .

And water cooling.

And that nifty stuff you rub on the processor which transfers the heat or something like that.

And I will place it in a refrigerator.

Hehe, defiantly go for it.

You better make it frezer tho.

This is lowest CPU priority, unless some app uses that priority folding wouldn't use any CPU. Or you can wrie a script to start and stop folding and stuff.

So are you folding now? And if not why are you even posting here?

Also, you don't want folding to take up CPU time on your G5 when you get it? Would you mind telling me exactly what it is you're planning on using it for?

I'm seeing scenes from "Serial Experiments Lain" - I want an entire room with liquid nitrogen cooling pipes and flooded floor.

When I kick off I want to live in the wired.

Heh, let's see how many people understand THIS post....

it's harder to spam as quickly when some of your idle cpu is being used.

Just to let you know, I benchmarked Quake 3 with and without Folding@Home running (terminal version).

Without: 81.9
With : 80.5

A whole 1.7% slower, oh no.

Thank you for that excellent illustration of F@H only using idle CPU power.
