Duplex printing on HP

I have problem. I just bought a HP Laser Jet P2015D. It is suppose to be compatible with OSX. The printer in question is duplex capable, i.e. prints on both sides of the paper. The problem is that you need the "HP printer tool program" to set up duplex printing (it is off by default). This %&#&!! program is only available for Win. So I tried to install the printer and the tools via Parallels. ...New Problem the USB port is too weak to detect the printer. So I bought a USB HUB with additional AC... didn't work either.
Ok, the last attempt was grasping after straws. I should have known this wouldn't work, but I am at roads end here. I spent three full days with HP support before these guys gave up.

My question is: Does anyone here know a trick how to change the printer configuration with out the help of HP printer configuration. I mean the entire Mac community cant be without duplex printing, or is it???

I have a HP laserJet 4M Plus and a PhotoSmart 7960. Each with Duplex add-ons. I can get these working without any extra bits of software. I must admit though, the 4M was a b!tch to get going - but all the software was within Tiger.

Have you read the support pages within Apple.com/support ?

I have an HP duplexing printer (2605dn). It's a fairly new model, so it might be different for you. I connect over Ethernet (it's shared between several computers on the network).

All I've ever done to install it is to find the printer using the Printer Setup Utility (Applications > Utilities). It finds it automatically because it's got Bonjour networking (previously Rendezvous), but I could equally just enter the printer's IP address and it would find it. I click the 'Add' button, which then brings up a sheet asking me to tell the OS what installable options are available on my model: I tick 'Duplex Unit' and leave 'Tray 3' set to 'Not Installed', then click 'Continue'.

Then it works just fine: there are additional options available in the OS-wide Print dialog box under the 'Layout' settings, to print 'Two-sided' (radio buttons: Off, Long-Edged Binding, Short-Edged binding).

Sorry, this is probably really unhelpful, but how are you installing your printer? Have you got to install drivers that aren't native to OS X?

This is different from mine. I don't have a network printer, I connect via airport express and a USB cable than directly to the network. I have the P2015d not the P2015dn or P2015X which both are network printers.

I install the drivers from the CD that came along. The problem is that it doesn't come with OSX version of the toolbox program.
I am seriously lost here, but thanks for your effort, I appreciate it. It feels a bit lonely when even HP support bails on me.
 
Yesssss

Ok , I got it now. I found a document on Apple.com/support (thanks FireArse). You can find the document here. After you have hit print, choose Layout from the Copies & Pages pop-up menu. Choose by which border you want the duplex by and you are done.

Again thanks for helping me! Just sad that the HP support wasn't able to figure this one out in three days.
 
HP 2015dn

I had a slightly different problem with mine which is a 'dn' and so is addressable directly via Ethernet.

Basically the supplied drivers (and the ones I downloaded from www.hp.com) didn't allow me to address the duplex function on the printer.

DrG is rigth and I had to turn the feature on using Safari and pointing it at the printer to get to the HP setup webpages built into the printer.

However, the supplied drivers didn't offer the option of duplex on either border. Eventually I got it working by using the HP2200dn drivers previously installed by:
  • telling the printer setup utility that it was a 2200dn rather than 2015dn
  • setting duplex as an installed option
  • increasing the installed RAM figure to reflect the installed 32Mb

This gives the duplex options as described above in the Copies and Pages menu.

Next task is to set duplex printing as the default for this printer. Ho, hum.

Installing an HP DUPLEX Printer

Here we are in 2012--
Thanks to Dr. Gargoyle's 2007 post about difficulties in installing a duplex printer, I was able to get two HP duplex printers installed on my 2 macbook airs.

The tech support at apple was TOTALLY unable to help. So this saved the day. Apple Tech support told me that the apple drivers were not perfected enough for duplex printing, and I need to install the authentic HP drivers.

Actually, the apple drivers were fine. The only problem is that you need to go to "layout" instead of to "finishing" to get the duplex option (once you have type commandP).

Thanks to everyone on this forum for all the advice. Now my wife thinks I am way smarter than apple tech support and I only had the macbook air for a week!
 
You actually have to set that you have the duplex module installed in the Properties of the Printer, Device Settings, set the duplex unit to installed.
 
I have an HP P2015dn. I never noticed there was a setting to enable the duplexer, as the OSX driver detected and enabled it by default. On my Win 7 PC I had to install the HP universal print drivers to get what OSX provided by default. That was on 10.6.4. I now have 10.6.8, print driver ver 18.4. The OSX driver also detects the existence of the printer's webpage, and auto opens Safari to access it.

My goal is to print 2 pages of music on one 8.5x11" sheet.

I need some tips on the page set-up &/or printer set-up ( I have an hp P2015d laser jet)

When I set the printer to put 2 pages on one sheet, a ridiculously large margin is added, shrinking the document too much.

I set the file page size at 1/2 sheet (5.5x8.5), hoping to fill the page with the music, but I just can't get it!
(The problem is there with "plain" Finale or pdf - and also word-processing documents)

On the printer-end,I fiddle around with "remove margins", "fit to page", etc., & in Fianle, I try adjusting the document margins, but haven't got it worked out!

I would greatly appreciate any guidance in this matter!

I assume you're trying to print both pages side by side in landscape mode. Another way is to create an appropriate sized blank page in landscape mode with your app, then paste the two pages to it, side by side with desired spacing. You can then print it as a single page document.
 
That may be in booklet printing. I can't check from here buy my HP4500 had that option. I could print up to 4 pages on one side of a sheet. It's more a function of the driver and you may have to go into advanced settings to find it.

Otherwise you'll have to do what someone mentioned and cut and paste into a document then print.
 
try this as well:



reset the printing system:

- Sys Prefs, Print & Fax or Print & Scan

- Press & hold down (control key on keyboard) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.

WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
