3 million initial units?

Check out this article:

http://www.businessweek.com/technolo...mpaign_id=yhoo

" In units built and shipped, the iPhone launch will dwarf anything Apple has attempted. It plans to have 3 million iPhones ready for sale on June 29, two sources say. (Apple won't comment.)"

Hm, that's pretty contradictory to what's been said so far. I was under the impression that they'd have more like a quarter million units.

I hope thats true. This could all be a marketing ploy to get people to rush to the stores thinking they wont get one. However I think the more telling comment in the article is about how SJ kept the supply of ipods slightly under the demand. As they say history repeats itself.

3 Million iPhones on June 29th?

Businessweek discusses the hype surrounding the iPhone and asks "How Big Will the iPhone Be?"
Quote:
If Apple's goal of selling 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008 seemed ambitious to some back in January when Jobs first unwrapped his new baby, few doubt it now. Wall Street speculation has gone from how much market share it can steal, to how much it can expand the overall smartphone market
According to two Businessweek sources, Apple plans to have 3 million iPhones ready for sale on launch day. Apple revealed through television ads earlier this week that the iPhone was coming on June 29th. Meanwhile, AT&T apparently anticpates large crowds and has reportedly hired crowd control personal at the AT&T stores in anticipation of the launch.

Finally, a few first hand reports (one, two) on the iPhone have been circulating, though the validity of the accounts is difficult to verify.

This is excellent news. Hopefully there will be no shortage of iPhones like the every other tech product in the past year or so.

So how many retail outlets does AT&T have? And Apple? And subsequently, how many units per outlet does that equal on average?

After a smidge of research, AT&T: 6000 outlets, Apple, roughly 200 for a total of 6200, meaning about 480/store. You can guarantee that the Apple Stores will stockpile more than the Cingular outlets. So basically, if this report is true, Apple will have plenty of iPhones, unless they experience unprecedented demand.

I wish AT&T can let the potential buyer register on their website for which store they wanna go buy their iphone... that way on 29th they will have at least a iphone for each register buyer...

Great news for Apple - I hope they blow their own (albeit conservative IMO) estimates out of the water! And here's hoping they have appropriate inventory management processes in place!

I remember reading 1800 AT&T retail stores + Apple Retail stores (how many are there? no more than 100-200 I would guess). So let's say 2000 stores

that's 1500 iphones per store (seems like a lot), assuming none held back for mail order.

Cingular Wireless is making its flagship wireless e-mail and phone offering, XpressMail with BlackBerry available at more than 6,000 Cingular retail stores and retail agent outlets.
Unless "retail agent outlets" don't count, whatever they are.

Good point about the mail order part. I completely forgot about the online store.

That estimate makes me feel a lot better, though I'll still be checking in with my local AT&T store several times the week of to be prepared.

Also, something to keep in mind, my friend who is a cingular salesman says they won't be available at franchise locations (which means I can't go through him, grrr...), so that could make the number of locations even smaller.

A release date of a Friday. Hmmm. I wonder how many people are going to make a three day weekend to pick up and play with their iPhone? I'm not sure about my plans for that day myself...

I was on the elevator in my buiding a few minutes ago, and iPhone came up within that 45 second trip. All 5 people were getting one as soon as they come out.

This is going to be big, REALLY big.

Late June

I wonder if they pushed the release date back to the end of June to give themselves another couple of weeks to build inventory to have A LOT of satisfied customers on the first couple of days.

Fantastic! No company needs the negative publicity of an expensive product that is largely unavailable at release. When consumers can't get what they want, the first thing that comes out of their collective mouth is "ahh, it's overpriced anyway..."

Unless the product is a Cabbage Patch Kid.
